  • Page 7 WESTERN CAROLINIAN November 12, 2010 CAMPUS. ELEE AIDS Memorial Quilt to be displayed Nov. 17-20 at WCU From Staff Reports Western Carolina Univer- sity will display nine of the more than 40,000 blocks of the AIDS Memorial Quilt from Wednesday, Nov. 17, to Saturday, Nov. 20, at - the Fine Art Museum. _The AIDS Memorial Quilt, founded in 1987 and facili- tated by the NAMES Proj- . ect Foundation, serves as an educational tool to promote the awareness of AIDS and the devastating impact of the disease. Each 12-foot block of the quilt is made up of panels that memorialize the life of a person lost to AIDS. What I find really in- teresting about the AIDS Memorial Quilt is that it not only is a piece of art, but also a prevention tool for HIV/ AIDS, said Holly Sorensen, wellness specialist with WCU. campus recreation and wellness. The quilt also serves as a beacon of hope for finding a cure. Lori Davis, assistant di- rector for campus activities, said the event, which was timed to coincide with the performance of the musical Rent at WCU, will help spark conversations about an important but often taboo topic of HIV and AIDS. In Jonathan Larsons Rent, a group of struggling New York artists and musicians are affected by the disease. HIV/AIDS is a_ topic often shied away from, and these two events offer a pow- erful way to have discussions on our campus about HIV and AIDS, said Davis. When WCU _ hosted panels of the AIDS Memo- rial Quilt in 2007, com- ments from visitors ranged from expressing discomfort to conveying that nobody wants to get tested, which emphasized to event organiz- ers the importance of hosting educational programs about the disease. Visitors can view the quilt panels from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 17, and Thursday, Nov. 18; 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, Nov. 19; and 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 20. An opening ceremony will be held in partnership with the Western NC AIDS Project at 5:30 p.m. Wednes- day, Nov. 17. At the closing coke set for 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 20, in advance of a 7:30 p.m. performance of Rent at WCU, Peter Koch, education specialist at the Mountain Nine panels of the AIDS Memorial Quilt will be available for viewing Now ie 20 in the Fine Art Museum at Western Carolina University. Heritage Center, will discuss the history of quilting. The AIDS Memorial Quilt committee is looking for more volunteers to help with the event, and to guard _ sections of the quilt during | the exhibit. WCU nursing grads post high pass rates on exams Graduates of Western Carolina Universitys School of Nursing have been post- ing high pass rates this year on national certification and licensure examinations. A report from the N.C. Board of Nursing indicates that 98 percent of graduates from WCUs bachelor of science in nursing program have _ passed the National Council Licensure Examination, the standard licensure test for, registered nurses, so. far in 2010. Fifty-five of 56 WCU stu- dents who took the NCLEX, as it is commonly called, . passed it and earned their li- ~ censes, said Vincent Hall, di- rector of the School of Nurs- ing. That group included some students who finished their degree requirements in WCUs traditional BSN pro- gram in May, and others who completed the accelerated BSN program in August. Across North Carolina, graduates from 70 com- munity colleges and four- year schools have taken the . NCLEX in 2010, and only 10 schools matched or exceeded WCUs pass rate. The pass rate for all graduates taking the examination in the state is 89 percent. Two other groups of WCU nursing = graduates have recorded a 100 percent pass rate on their national certification examinations. All nine of the graduates _ from WCUs masters degree program in nurse anesthesia who took the Nurse Anesthe- sia Certification Examination in May and June passed iit, said Shawn Collins, director , of WCUs program: Those graduates comprise the sec- ond group of nurse anes- thesia students to complete WCUs program, which started in 2007. Also, all 14 graduates from WCUs family nurse practitioner masters degree program passed their nation- al certification examination in May and June, said Judy Neubrander, associate dean in WCUs College of Health and Human Sciences and as- sociate director for graduate programs in the School of Nursing.
