  • News The Western Carolinian Page 3 Thursday , September 15,1988 Advertising: The newest scholarship by Brian May Scott Anderson, a junior marketing major, has received the first award from a new scholarship fund created by the Advertising Federation of Western North Carolina. Established for Advertising and Marketing students, the fund hopes to promote advertising careers among outstanding students at WCU. Selection by a scholarship and awards com mittee in the SCU School of Business, is the deciding factor in the award of this scholarship. The basis for the selection consists of: talent, academic achievement, participation in social, civic and school activities. However, preference is given to N.C. residents and students in need of financial support. Any rising, entering or enrolled juniors and seniors majoring in a business field with a concentration in marketing are eligible for consideration for this new annual scholarship. Scott will receive $800 for the 1988-89 academic year, yet, the scholarship can be awarded twice for a total of two years. Partnership of Equals Strive to Improve Teacher Education How can colleges and universities in western North Carolina work with public schools to improve teacher education and teaching? That's the challenge of a new collaborative venture, A Partnership of Equals, funded by a$25,000 grant to Western Carolina University through the Western Regional Education Center in Waynesville. The center has contracted with WCU's School of Education and Psychology to carry out the project, which is sponsored by the State Board of Education in all eight education regions in the state. "The purpose of the program is to improve teaching and teacher education, and one aspect of this goal is better communication between the schools and higher education," said Marilyn Feldman, WCU education professor and coordinator of the collaboration project. It currently involves 20 public school systems and four institutions of higher education with teacher training programs - Western Carolina, Mars Hill College, Warren Wilson College and the University of North Carolina at Ashevilie. When the funding for the program began last spring, Feldman convened meetings of teachers and administrators at the public schools and higher education institutions to develop a plan of collaboration for 1988-1989. "We looked at specific things we could do to improve teacher education and teaching in the region," she said. The plan focuses on three objectives: establishing and maintaining communication, establishing new guidelines for selecting teachers who work with student teachers, and conducting training programs and seminars for all educators. A total of 25 activities were identified for this year, including disseminating a newsletter and regular mailings to superintendents, teacher and higher education faculty; conducting joint research projects; and offering workshops on teaching for public school and university faculty. "One of the main concerns of public school teachers has been how cooperating teachers (those who work with student teachers) are selected," Feldmann said. According to the current system, a representative of each school system and the principal make the recommendations. "But teachers want this process looked at," she said. "We are going to discuss the process, survey teachers and others through a questionnaire, then develop recommended guidelines." A committee also will recommend rewards for being a cooperating teacher, she said. Now, there is no method of reimbursement and little recognition. The project also will sponsor some joint training programs for teachers and higher education faculty, as well as "reflective teaching workshops" where teachers evaluate their own teaching. Because surveys done so far for the project indicate that teachers' No. 1 concern is discipline and classroom management, Feldmann plans to organize a workshop on classroom organization and effective classroom teaching for a select group of teachers. These teachers would then give workshops and train other teachers at their schools in these areas. The collaboration project was recommended by the University of North Carolina Task Force on the Preparation of Teachers and funded by the General Assembly.
