  • The Western Carolinian SPORTS August 19, 2013 AS Foot Allison Adkins Staff Writer The Catamounts football season starts on August 29 at Middle: Tennessee State. The football program will debut in Cullowhee on Saturday, Sept. 14, at 3:30 p.m., displaying their hard work from the off season. The Cata- mounts have five games at home this season. Head Coach Mark Spier is going into his second season as a Head Coach. Spier has ex- pressed that his biggest regret from last season was assuming that lead- ership would develop without his guidance. T have spent a lot of the time in the off season developing leadership, because we got guys who can play. We just have to teach them that it is about vision and leader- ship, said Spier. There are sophomores that are leaders on our football team. That bodes well for us this year and for years to come. Spiers focus is on lead- ership and having the team overcome through leadership. This season, leadership is flourishing on the team through at- titude and mentality. Our players are ex- pecting to go win. They are expecting that when we go play a Southern Conference opponent that there no longer is a hope to go play good or hope to win. They are developing that mental- ity of an expectation, and that is coming from them, said Spier. The mindset that ex- pectation comes withisa winning mindset. Showing even further commitment to improve- all returns, leadership ts ke Head Coach Spier plans to focus on leadership this season. ment and winning, Spier explained, We had all but three scholarship players up for the summer. That has never happened. This is an even greater feat knowing that most student athletes were in Cullowhee on their own dime this summer and not going to summer school. That doesnt come from hope. That comes from expectation, said Spier. The 2013 Catamount football team is a young team. The team is com- piled of 42 freshman and Red Shirted freshman, 22 sophomores, and 29 com- bined upper classmen. The last few seasons have let me down, but hopefully this year will be that next season we have all been waiting for, said senior nursing student at Western Caro- lina Cameron Milioni. Spier acknowledges that experience is needed. Well, there is no ques- tion, there is nothing like experience at any level, any sport. You cant teach or coach experience, said Spier. The 2012 season had three games: Samford University, The Citadel and The University of Tennessee Chattanooga where the Catamounts went into the fourth quar- ter ahead, but the oppo- nent came out victorious. Spier said, You win fourth quarter ball games with experience and leadership. Thats what our mission is. Those games we lost in the fourth, we got to go win them. And that just comes with experience and leadership. In the middle of the 2012 season, Troy Mitchell took Eddie Sullivans place as the starting quarterback for the Catamounts. Eddie could have pouted that a true fresh- man took his spot, but Eddie battled back in the spring, said Spier. Both players have had a great spring. Speir said that Mitchell has stepped up, and that he has become a leader for this football team. Theres no secret, our Achilles heel last year was defense, said Spier. Last season, the foot- ball program recruited heavily in offensive play- ers. This year of fresh- man recruits are heavier on the defensive side. Our strength coach is really excited about the speed and athleticism of our recruits on defense, said Spier. The coaches, as well as the fans, hope that these freshmen and the upperclassmen defensive players will rise to the oc- casion and make WCUs defense strong. If we can make as much strides defensively as our offense did last year, I think we could go win some ball games that we didnt win last year, said Spier. The program has gained some new staff this offseason such as strength coach Evan Barr, defensive coor- dinator Shawn Quinn and offensive assistant David Patten. Photo by Mark Haskett Spier is thrilled about his new staff. ' He said, David Patten is such a great person... He is a strong Christian, who has been a youth minister who has had: this burning desire to. see if coaching was his, thing. Those guys look , to him and respect him. It is just a big bonus having him. Another new addi- tion to the team, the Catamounts will debut anewhelmetinthis .- 2013 season.
