WC ensme azine Hill Tied Both a SoCon and NCAA I-AA Record by _ Returning Two INTs for TDs Travis Hill SoCon Defensive Player of the Week WCU OPI RELEASE re) O. ie) Western Carolina true freshman linebacker Travis Hill (Rock Hill, S.C./Northwestern HS) has been named the Southern Conference Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced today. He was also | honored with Furman quarterback Ingel Martin (Offen- sive Player of the Week) and Furman kicker Scott Beckler (Freshman of the Week). Offensive or Defensive Player of the Week honors since 1998, when then freshman Adrian Peterson (Georgia Southern) was named Offensive Player of the Week three times. (Each week, the SoCon honors an offensive player, a defensive player and a freshman. Hill had an impressive collegiate debut as the Catamounts handed West Virginia State a 77-7 loss this past Thursday and held the Yellow Jackets to just 117 yards of total offense. With the Catamounts leading 43-0 early in the third quarter, Hill intercepted a pass and returned it six yards for a touchdown. Later in the period, he intercepted his second pass of the game and returned it 35 yards fora TD. With that, he tied an NCAA I-AA and Southern Conference record by returning two interceptions for TDs, becoming just the 17th at the I-AA level and just the fourth player in league history to accomplish the feat. For the game, Hill had a team-high nine tack- les (six solo), including one for a loss, with a forced fumble and a fumble recovery to go along with his two interceptions. The Catamounts tied an NCAA i-AA record (tying six others including SoCon member Chatta- nooga and WCUs upcoming opponent Nicholls State) by returning three interceptions for TDs in a game. Sophomore Ryan Nesby started the third quarter by returning an interception 49 yards fora TD.
