  • jm I SOCCER SPORTS WCU Soccer Suffers a 4-1 Loss to Georgia State University The Catamounts Return to Action on Thursday Sept. 16 at South Florida WCU OPI RELEASE Western Carolina women's soccer was defeated 4-1 by Georgia State University in the Catamount's final match of the Georgia State/Marriott invitational on Sunday at the Atlanta Silverbacks Stadium. Western Carolina took an early lead in the game as junior Casey Davis, a Marietta, Ga. native, headed a Megan Chambers, who hails from Roswell, Ga., corner kick pass into the left side of the goal for a 1-0 advantage. The Catamounts carried that lead into halftime. Georgia State came out strong in the second half as Sarah Feske evened the scored as she collected a Nathalie Carter pass and fired the ball into the right side of the net. Collins-Cephers followed with her goal on a Feske pass for a 2-1 advantage at the 59:29 mark. Lauren Chavez scored when she picked up the loose ball in front of the goalkeeper and slipped it into the left side. Carter closed out the Lady Panthers scoring at the 88:55 mark on a header into the high left side of the goal. Georgia State goalkeeper Alexa Pasquarelli earned the win, registering three saves in 79 minutes of action before being replaced by Charlotte Vargo, who had one save. Western Carolina sophomore Alesha Row collected eight saves for Western Carolina. The Catamounts are scheduled to travel to Tampa, Fla. on Thursday, Sept. 16, 2004 to face South Florida with match time set to begin at 7:30 pm (Travel plans may be altered due to Hurricane Ivan). VOLLEYBALL Western Carolina Downs Wofford In Campbell Classic Opener WCU OPI RELEASE Buies Creek, S.C. - Western Carolina picked up its first victory of the year as the Catamounts defeated Wofford 3-1 (30-22, 30-25, 20-30, 30-25) in the opening match of the Campbell Classic Volleyball Tournament on Friday evening. The match did not count in Southern Conference standings. Western Carolina (1-5) was led by sophomore Kellyn Thaut (18 kills), senior Stephanie Peters (12 kills, 19 assists) and freshman Melissa Parana (11 kills). Setters Meghan Boyle (21 assists) and Kate Willard (18 assists) directed a Catamount offensive attack which out-hit Wofford .208-to -.095. | was pleased with the way we played today, said WCU head coach Angell Benson. It was good to get our first win under our belt. We are coming together as a team and are showing progress each match. We still need to correct some mistakes and continue to play well tomorrow, facing a tough Campbell team and UNC Asheville. Stephanie (Peters) was solid and Melissa (Parana) controlled the net well. Wofford (0-4) struggled offensively committing 32 attack errors in the match. Andrea Duke led the Terriers with 15 kills, while Rhea DeJesus tallied 36 assists. Meredith Brantley (12 digs), Duke (10 digs) and Shana Glenn (10 digs) led the Wofford defensive effort. The Catamounts will face host team Campbell on Saturday (Sept. 11) at Noon, then turn around to face mountain rival UNC Asheville in the final match of the Classic at 3 pm.
