Ventilated Voice 1/26/95 page 2 by Sam Robison Bob scanned the room. The air was thick with bourbon fumes and pancake grease. "Ordinary Average Guy" hissed from a juke box's aged speaker. He spotted an empty booth and made for it. A heart-stopping, boar-like grunt stopped Bob in his tracks. His adrenal gland wheezed out a drop or two. Fight or flight! his brain screamed. He raised his head, vertebrae creaking, to a sight of pure, masculine, Harley- . riding terror. Bob whimpered. The biker eyed him as Bob slid into his booth, burying his head in a book. "Can I take your order?" Bob looked up from his copy of "Co-Dependent No More" to be greeted by the world's single most stunning living representation of beauty. She waited tables at the Waffle House. Her name was Melma. She was narcoleptic. Bob's eyes slid shamelessly down her train-stopping body like hot wax on greasy china. The book fell from his hands. It landed on his fork. The fork launched into the air, it's curved side catching the gleam of a sudden grease fire in the kitchen. Its raw, fiery light flashed at Melma, triggering her brain to do its trick. The fork bounced off the biker's forehead with an audible "ploinki" Melma collapsed in Bob's lap. The juke box's speaker fizzled out and the biker began growling. Bob looked from the rising biker to Melma and back again. Bob's eyes widened. His nostrils flared. His mouth drew up in a trembling scowl. "No," spoke Bob, pulling Melma close. The Western Carolinian is Western Carolina University's student-run newspaper. The paper was published as the Cullowhee Yodel from 1924 to 1931 before changing its name to The Western Carolinian in 1933.
