  • WC newsmagazine 9 PROFILE Jason Melvin reflects on the marching band by Sergio Ortiz | Wenewsmagazine Then this one time in band camp, |... Unfortunately, when people hear this phrase, many misconceptions about band people enter their minds. Junior Jason Melvin seems to break away from the stereotypical moid. Jason has a life beyond the band and does things that band people supposedly dont do. Jason originally got involved in band when he played the drums in his first year of high school. I knew | wanted to play the drums because | had been playing them since i was in sixth grade. Once out of high school, the prospect of getting involved with the university band wasnt really in his mind, but attractive stipulations led him to think about it and ultimately to join the Pride of the Mountains Marching Band at WCU. First of all, some of my friends wanted me to join the band, so | thought about it, and then my parents told me that if | joined the band they would buy me a Playstation 2. Jason continued to play the drums and was part of the drum line his Freshman and Sophomore years. After years of involvement in the marching band, Jason realizes what people think about the marching band and the people in it: Many people call us band geeks because they think thats all we do. Even movies like American Pie have given us a bad reputation. Although Jason does admit that band life can be demanding and takes up a lot of his time, he is able to do other things. When we have band camp we wake up early in the morning and end up finishing practice around seven in the evening. Jason also explained how hot and physically demanding band camp can be. But once school starts, things get a little bit better with practices that only last a few hours. When it's show time, though, all that practice pays off. When you start playing at halftime everyone is cheering for you and it is the biggest rush and payoff to know that its not the football team they are cheering at, but the band. Jason also says that he finds it funny that the same people who make fun of them are sometimes the ones who cheer for them the loudest. Outside of band, Jason likes to play any kind of sport that is fun and physically challenging. Jason also likes to do things normal people do such as going out to movies and just chilling out with his friends. Currently, Jason is the electronics coordinator for the band and must set up the equipment in two minutes before halftime. Although many think its easy, being part of the band is challenging and requires determined and motivated individuals. * im & od Q. = < Q Photo by Sergio Ortiz = - 4 Base Camp Cullowhee offers Duckie Trip takes you to the backpacking trips fiver itd by Sergio Ortiz | Wenewsmagazine _ by Sergio Ortiz | WCnewsmagazine Although the name sounds strange, it's not actually what you ; think, Base Camp Cullowhee will be sponsoring a trip down the is the college life getting to you?
