  • july 2002 WCnewsmagazine welcome newsmagazine yecorjcl _surnmer WELCOME FROM THE EDITOR "Liberty" Issue helping eliminate post Fourth blues- Barbecue, Potato Salad, Pinto Beans and Banana Pudding We are celebrating 226 years of f'liberty and justice for all" this month- •That's right this. month, the whole. month, we proclaim, '"Independence Month," With this "Independence" remembrance, we should get reacquainted with a few reasons we celebrate being "Americans.i From homespun Americana €0 an in depth 100k at some American icons this 'Liberty" edition of WCnewsmagazine gives some fine examples ofjusta few of the varieties we come in: While I Was working on this issue, I asked people around campus what they felt it meant to be 'American." Some answers surprised me. And some answers really forced me to think about how differently we all feel about being fAmerican." All Lin all there were a few storieS I would not share, then again, a few others that I could not share. But after making a promise to share this story, one of my fellow "Americans" told me how they felt it was important that we remember those Americans who live in the C'un-united3' areas to the north and south of us, making up the rest of the 'two American continents. And why shouldn't I remind us, "Americans" in the "United States," as we celebrate our independence, that everyone who shares the name "American" must live in freedom, ruled by .freely elected leaderse The independence sought back in 1776 only started with the signing of the Declaration (that's when the fighting •really began). AS Americans, we have a responsibility to know and understand what Tights and freedoms •we've fought for, for the last 226 years, Read the Bill of Rights on page 11, and brush up on your flag etiquette. while you're at it On page 9. Also, read some not- so-boring Pledge history on page 8. On the lighter side, this issue is just as packed full of stuff that will make you laugh (Page 15, Vander-bean is back and the Psychic Pirate strikes again.) as stuff that is "good for you" (Page 12, Music and Literature; Page 13, Healthy Living). How's that for fair and balanced? We hope you are enjoying our new format; please let us know what you think. Send us E-mail at WC@WCU.EDU. Best wishes America!
