  • News The Western Carolinian Page 2 Thursday, June 22,1989 Professor Paul M. Haberland WCU Professor Earns Education Award WCU OPI Paul M. Haberland, Professor and head of WCU's Modem Foreign Languages department, recently received the H.F. Robinson International Social Science Achievement Award. Haberland, a Professor of German, is the fifth recipient of the award, presented annually by the Pi Gamma Mu international honor society of social science to a WCU faculty or staff member for distinction in the area of international education and service. Haberland was selected for the award because of his international achievement in publications, leadership in language, and outstanding work with foreign students. A member of the Rotary International organization, Haberland brought Rotary scholars from Holland and Germany to WCU in 1988-89 and set up a Rotary exchange of students between Jackson County high schools and Pucbla, Mexico. He also established a group study exchange between Rotary districts in Africa and Western North Carolina. The Haberland family is host to eight WCU students from Nepal, Bhutan, India, and Sri Lanka. Pi Gamma Mu's members are in the top 35 percent of their class and have had at least a Baveragein21 hoursofacademic work in social sciences. The organization was established in 1983, when it awarded its International Social Science Achievement Award to the late H.F. Robinson, WCU chancellor emeritus. The award was presented to Haberland by Gordon Mercer, Professor and head of WCU's Political Science, Public Affairs, and Sociology department and chairman of the Pi Gamma Mu award selection committee. History Department Takes Academic Excellence Award; Creates New Scholarship for History Majors WCU OPI WCU's History Department has established a new scholarship fund, using money presented to the department last spring for winning the university's Academic Award of Excellence. In 1986, WCU Chancellor Myron L. Coulter established the award program, which carries a $10,000 prize, to reward academic departments and support offices for superior performance. Members of WCU's History department have agreed to place the award money into the Development Foundation of Western Carolina University to provide scholarships for stu dents planning to pursue a major in history. "Members of the history department talked about what to do with the award," said Max Williams, Professor and head of the History department. "We concluded it would be best to keep the $10,000 intact. We put the money into the Development Fund with the idea that we would take a portion of the interest in the amount of $500 per year to be applied to a scholarship." The new History Department Academic Excellence Scholarship will be awarded annually to an incoming freshman or transfer student. The first award will be presented in the Single Mothers Workshop Offered WCU OPI WCU's Office of Rural Education has obtained grants totaling nearly $100,000 to start a unique program to help single mothers obtain job skills and help them become self-sufficient. The New Beginnings Project is designed to help single female heads of households in the seven western North Carolina counties break out of the poverty cycle, said Judith Pilch, associate director of WCU's Office for Rural Education. "Single mothers with young children face tremendous obstacles to getting a job and maintaining a household on their own," Pilch said. "The project attempts to help them remove these barriers, become employable, and get off public assistance." The project is funded by $66,175 from the Southwestern North Carolina Planning and Economic Development Commission and $30,000 from the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation. It will operate in two phases — a month long residential session at Western from June 17-July 14, and a year long follow-up in the women's home communities. As many as 20 mothers and their children (ages 3 to 10) from the seven western counties will live in a university residence hall and eat in the cafeterias. They will participate in individual and family activities, planned by New Beginnings coordinator Sarah Altman. Altman is instructor/counselor of drug and alcohol technology at Southwestern Community College, and formerly SCC's Job Training Partnership Act (JTPA) counselor. Family Study sessions will involve workshops in parenting skills, relationship building, decision making, values clarification, and personal development. Workshops and field trips also will focus on career planning and development cnmmnniM- tion skills, assertiveness training, and job hunting and interview skills. "We'll put the women in touch with resource people in their communities," Altman said. Each participant must develop a personal plan and work with a female mentor from her community in the coming year. The objective is for these families to become self-sufficient, and for the women themselves to become mentors. The mentors will be area women "who have been there before" and can provide the support the women will need both during and after the residential experience, Altman said. "The mentors are very important to the program, because these women can't accomplish all this on their own. They need somebody who has been there saying 'You can do it; I believe in you.'" The women who have been selected for New Beginnings generally are 25 to 35 years old, have two to three children from one or more unsuccessful marriages, and are on public assistance. Their education levels range from college graduate to high school dropout. "What all these women have in common is that they are tired of being the way they are; they want to change and are willing to get help,"Altman said. "They are highly motivated." Participants have been referred through community agencies in Swain, Macon, Jackson, Haywood, Cherokee, Clay, and Graham counties. "It seemed to us that this was the best use for the money," Williams said. "Hopefully, we will be able to attract better and better students." The scholarship will be awarded on the basis of merit, rather than financial need, Williams said. "We'll be looking for evidence of high academic performance." The departmental Scholarships and Awards Committee will review and screen prospective scholarship recipients and make recommendations to the History department faculty for the final selection.« The Western Carolinian Western Carolina University The Old Student Union P.O.
