  • February 9, 1995 Western Carolinian Features Rick Boyer to Read at City Lights Nomad,W Open Mic Brings Literature to WCU Earle Wheeler Associate Editor On Thursday, February 4, at 8 pm, author Rick Boyer will give a reading at City Lights in support his newest novel, Pirate Trade. This reading is open to the public. Mr. Boyer published his first novel, The Giant Rat of Sumatra, in 1976. To date, he has written eight non-fiction books and eight novels. Most of the novels feature Doc Adams, a dentist with an adventurous streak. Pirate Trade, however, sails to new seas of characterization with a new persona, Buck Gentry. "I am Doc Adams," Boyer said, "but I'm not Buck Gentry." Mr. Boyer won the Edgar Allan Poe award for Best Mystery Novel of 1982. In 1989 he served as the chairman of the Best Novel Committee for the Mystery Writers of America. In 1988, Mr. Boyer began teaching at WCU . He has gained popularity and affection from his students for his workshop oriented creative writing courses. Rick Lewis Boyer is a novelist and a professor of English at WCU. Chris Carrier Staff Reporter This past Friday, February 3, Cullowhee's literary seams bulged to grotesque proportions at the open mic (Open Mind •Martyr* Mouth) reading that was held in the Cherokee Room. The WCU's literary magazine Nomad and the Western Carolinian's Ventilated Voice hosted the evening's festivities. Despite a lack of promotion, word of mouth brought in a record-breaking crowd. The catering (Count Chocula, Spam, Cheese-It Party Mix, and Little Debbie Valentine Cakes) was described as "atrociously innovative" by long-time, self described "poetry reading groupie," Tracy Hart. Those who read poetry were: Earle Wheeler (who hosted the event), Jimmy McLachlan, James Stewart, Scott Francis, Chris Carrier, Jonathen Griffin, Diana Jurss, Thomas Rain Crowe, Randy Pitts, Dave Williams, Staeci Ruiz, and Earle Wheeler (who denied he was an "egomaniac," but simply was the "Alpha and the Omega"). After the reading, there was a music/ spoken word showcase featuring Ryan Fauber; Jon Vester with Jimmy McLachlan; and Scott Francis and erl of erl jam. The final portion of the reading was open to anyone in the audience who raised their hands. In addition to several repeat readers were Eugene Trantham and Daryl Hale. After one poet said "Jesus-Fucking- Christ" during his reading, two audience members left. Nomad executive staff expressed little concern over the possibility of offending the crowd. According to one anonymous poet, "So someone gets offended by what [the offending poet] said. I get offended too, sometimes, but I can stick it out and figure out what's going on inside these guys' and girls' heads." Nomad plans to hold another reading this semester to support the release of its 1995 issue, but no date has been set.
