  • 6 THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN mm Monday, May 4, 1971 WCU wins district track crown •f A NEW DISTRICT RECORD— Ben Bailey turned in a time of 14:31.9 to take first place In the 3-mile Run, settinganew District record along with a new WCU record. Bailey also won the Mile run in 4:17.5. The Western Carolina track team swept first place in nine of the eighteen events, and set seven new records Saturday to win the District 6 NAIA track and field championship at Boone, N.C. Western Carolina took first place in the moet with 106 points. Appalachian State University finished second with 94; South Carolina State third with 72; and Mars Hill College fourth with 10. Allen University, Benedict College, and Voorhees also competed but did not score. WCU began its run to victory as Dan Walt won the Pole Vault by clearing 13' 6". Second place fell to Ron Autrey, of WCU, when he vaulted 12' 6", while Lenny McClenny of ASU finished third on 11' 6". In the Shot Put, WCU's Glenn Hill set a new school record as WCU defeats N.Georgia, but falls to ASU in tenais Appalachian swept six singles matches and two doubles matches for a 8-1 victory over WCU yesterday. It was the second tennis victory of the season for Appalachian over WCU. Craig Linton lost a hard match to Rick Keller 6-1,4-6, 3-6. John Gilbert, the number two man, lost to Ron Davis 6-8, 0-6. George Pankiw was completely over-powered by Dave Richardson 0-6, 1-6. The number four man, Don Bolick, lost to Steve Blahton 3-6, 3-6. Bolick only won one serve in both his doubles and singles matches. Bill Robinson, an outstanding freshman, went three sets with David Rouse to lose 7-5, 5-7, 2-6. Tim Oates lost to Don Eason 4-6, 3-6. Linton and Bolick went three sets for Western's only victory: 2-6, 7-6, 3-7, in the first tie breaker set in Western's his= tory, won after being down 15- 40. Gilbert and Robinson lost to Davis and Blanton 5-7, 1-8. The team of Oates and Pan klw were out classed by Rouse and Eason 0-6, 2-6. He was followed by ASU's Cleve Rlehl in second at 46* 1 1/2"; Harry HUewltz of ASU third at 44' 9 1/2"; Jim Dougherty of WCU fourth at 41* 3"; and WCU's David Friedland fifth at 40' 10 1/4". the team score now stood at Western Carolina 19, Appalachian 13, with no other teams having scored. South Carolina begun scoring when they won the Discus as Jimmy Fulwood took flrstplace with a throw of 129' 1". WCU's Jim Dougherty came in second at 127' 5", followed by ASU's Bill Hager in third at 124' 6". Glenn Hill finished fourth at 118' 2". Jerry Gaines had proved a double winner for WCU as he won both the Triple and Long Jumps breaking the previous records in each. Turning in a 24' 8" jump in the Long Jump, Gaines set a new District record as well as a school record. Gaines then returned to set a new school record in the Triple Jump with an effort of 48' 9 1/2". Second place In the event was taken by ASU's Barry Tripplett at 44* 9 1/2", followed by Hayes Powell in third at 44' 0 1/2". The score now stood at WCU 42, ASU 30, and SCS 6. ASU's BUI Gamble won the Javelin Throw on a throw of 173* 9", followed by SCS's Jim my Fulwood in second at 171' 9". Gary Lawing of Mars Hill finished third at 171' 1", with ASU's Chip Birch fourth and Roy Bryan fifth. In the High Jump, WCU's Tom Baker cleared 6' 2 1/4" to take first place, with ASU's Chip Birch and John Rutt tied In second place at 6' 1". Third place was captured by ASU's Doug Chappell at 5' 10", followed by WCU's Mike Flowe in fourth at 5' 8". Mike Blake set a new WCU record by winning the Steeplechase In 9:43.5. ASU's Jim Driver came in second at 10: 07.4 with Steve Pittman of ASU third at 10:13.9, and Eddie Perry fourth at 10:32.3. The score had now moved to WCU 58, ASU 55, SCS 10, and MH 5. South Carolina State won the 440-yard Relay in 42:35, with ASU in second at 44.1. WCU's Ben Bailey won the Mile Run on a 4:12.85 time. Steve Fleming finished second CONTINUED Page 8. . .. PERFECT SPLASHDOWN-^Jerry Gaines jumped 24' 8" Saturday to win the Long Jump in the District 6 NAIA Championship. With this jump, Gaines set a new District record, as well as a new WCU record.
