  • Lady Cats Clobber Davidson, Wofford By Cory Habicht Asst. Sports Editor The Lady Catamounts won their two home conference games by a combined 43 points this week as they leap back into the thick of the Southern Conference standings. The two wins put Western Carolina into a three-way tie for sixth place in the conference, . improving three spots from a week ago. Last night at the Ramsey Center the Lady Cats took a big lead early against the Lady Terriers of Wofford and held on to win comfortably, 76-64. The win was the second straight at home for Western (10-12, 4-9) and pulled them even with Wofford (8-14,4-9) and East Tennessee State in the SoCon. After being held scoreless for the first 3:02 of the game, the Lady Cats took it inside where forwards junior Laura Echols and freshman Tiffany Hamm combined to put up Western's first 13 points. The rest of the squad followed suit as the Lady Catamounts emerged from a 7-7 tie with a 19-3 run, giving them a commanding 26-10 advantage. Freshman forward Janetta Heggins capped the run with two consecutive transition lay-ups. Western would trade baskets with Wofford going into the locker room and the score stood at 35-21 lead at the half. Posing a possible threat for the Lady Cats, however, Echols, the conference's leading scorer and fourth-leading rebounder, picked up her third foul with less than 30 seconds remaining in the initial half. Western Carolina would steadily extend their lead in the second half. Hamm hit her only three-pointer of the game to give her team a 53-33 lead with 13:26, their largest lead of the game. Wofford finally began to chip into the lead, as Echols picked up her fourth foul with 10:51 left in the half and was forced to take a seat on the bench. Just as Wofford photo by Mark Haskett/OPI Marsha McGillivary scored a career-high 21 points in the 31 point rout of Davidson Saturday afternoon in the Ramey Center. started their comeback, however, sophomore guard Marsha McGillivary scored seven- straight points to take the Lady Cat advantage to 62-39. They, would relinquish the lead slightly toward the end, but still acquired the win. Despite battling foul trouble for most of the game, Echols managed to toss in 19 points to lead the Lady Cats and pulled down eight rebounds. Hamm dominated the glass for WCU by grabbing nine rebounds to go along with her 15 points. Senior April Fleck notched ten points and swiped six steals, while McGillivary poured in 16 points. Fleck led Western's strong defensive effort as the Lady Catamounts forced 21 Lady Terrier turnovers and held them under 40 percent from the field. She also held Wofford leading scorer Jenny Nett to only four points on anemic 1 -for-8 field goal shooting. "Going into Auburn playing the number 11 team on the road in front of 3,000 fans, it's no easy task, and we just didn't get it done," said Raleigh on the Cats first series of the season against a tough opponent. "But they knew that they had two fights on their hands wrapping up the weekend." He added, "I'm not disappointed in the team, I'm disappointed for them. Saturday and Sunday were totally different," Raleigh said. The Catamounts wrapped up the three game series on Sunday, falling 5- 4 to Auburn as the Tigers plated four runs in the bottom of the ninth. Western Carolina led 4-1 going into the bottom of the ninth after their three- run eighth, but a pair of hit bats-men and two loaded the bases for the opportunistic Tigers. Dan Foley, pitching in relief, threw two wild pitches and surrendered an infield single to give the game to Auburn. Sophomore Ryan Foster was saddled with the loss after recording an inning and two-thirds, facing ten batters, and striking out a pair. WCU had a great start from Ryan Basner, who went six and a third innings, surrendering one run on three hits and striking out three. The Catamounts were led at the plate by senior catcher Matt Price, who went 2-for-3 with a double and scored a run. Designated hitter Doug Meyers went 2-for-4 at the plate on Sunday with a homerun and a double. In the finale, Raleigh stated that his team played "outstanding defense" and "did some good things against a good AU pitcher" but simply "didn't finish the game." Saturday's tilt was equally as exciting with the Cats tying the game at two-apiece in the sixth yet yielding a pair of runs late to give AU the 4-2 victory. "Saturday was tight all of the way through," said Raleigh. "We had a lot of opportunities with runners on but couldn't seem to get that hit that'd get them home." Catamount hurler Joe Camac took the loss after only pitching one inning in relief of starter Jared Burton. Burton went four and two-thirds surrendering two runs on five hits. Camac faced four batters, walking one and giving up the winning run. Second baseman Todd Roper led the Cats against AU pitching going 2- for-4 scoring a run. Rod Goldston and transfer Donovan Minero added WCU's RBIs in the loss. Goldston's lone hit on the day was a double, and Minero added a stolen base. The first game of the three-game series was the most lopsided of the weekend. On the heels of an eight-run fourth inning, which broke a scoreless tie, the Tigers routed the Cats 14-1. Goldston led the Cats at the plate going 2-for-3 on the day. First baseman Alan Beck was 2-for-4 and was a part of ten putouts on the afternoon.
