  • October 19,1995 Western Carolinian News Changing Of The Guard At Power 91 New WWCU General Manger Discusses Stations Plans for f95-f96 by Shelly EHer StaffReporter Recently the campus Media Board appointed Yancey Mayfield to the position of General Manger of WWCU. Mayfield is a communication major with a concentration in Electronic Media. Her involvement with radio began last year when she became a part of the Power 91 general staff. Initially, Mayfield worked on the weekends as a DJ. She was appointed Assistant Program Director by last years General Manager After three weeks at that position, she applied for and was appointed General Mananger for 1995- 96. During the summer, Mayfield completed an internship at WCHZ 95.1 F.M. in Augusta GA, which is near her home town of Atlanta. After graduation, she hopes to return to the station and work as a DJ and eventually become a member of the executive staff. According to Mayfield, "Every aspect of WWCU is going to be changed. We have a lot to do and we are trying to get input from the students on what they want to hear. We want to make the weekends dedicated to whatever you don't WWCU General Manager Yancey Mayfield. Photo by Marcus DeMaiijer hear during the^veek. We need input from the students. If they are happy with what is going on now, then the station will leave it that way. If not, we need to get an idea of what they want to hear." Mayfield stated that one way she hopes to accomplish this is by using questionnaires in this edition of the Carolinian. She said, "We're really going to push hard on the questionnaires and get as much feedback as possible from students." Some of the other changes that Mayfied wants to incorporate include creating better contests such as concert tickets and CD giveaways. "I'm going to push hard for better concerts to send people to and better CD's... I want stuff people are really enthusiastic about." When asked about the past conflicts that the station has faced, Yancey stated that, "I really wanted to come back to the station. I had a feeling that so much had gone wrong with the way the staff had been treated and the way the music had come out. There was so much animosity with everyone at the station and I knew the station could be so much more. Things that happened in the past won't happen this year." Mayfield said. Mayfield continued, "One of the key purposes of this station is to give people experience. I want this to be a place where people feel they can come and in and get professional training and experience and have confidence in the real world of radio." WCU Gay and Lesbian Society celebrated National Coming Out Day on Oct. 11. Photo by Sean Corcoron HomeComing '95: A Mixture Of Old And New by Heather Sheppard StaffReporter Homecoming is a celebration of tradition, but Homecoming '95 will feature many new additions. These new additions include a walking banner parade and banner contest, a bonfire and step show and the crowning of Western's first Homecoming King. The festivities begin Thursday, October 26, and will continue through Saturday, October 28. The celebration begins on Thursday, October 26, with entertainment by local bands in the University Center Grand Room from 8 p.m. until midnight. Native Tongue and Minus Us are scheduled to perform. Native Tongue has a bluesy rock sound while Minus Us has a thrashing punk sound similar to Fugazi. The walking banner parade will be one of WCU's new Homecoming traditions. Clubs, organizations, residence halls, and individuals will march from the UC Lawn to Camp Lab while displaying their Catamount pride. Banners and walking floats will be judged with prizes awarded to the most creative pieces. The parade will also include the Homecoming Court and the WCU Marching Band. Following the walking banner parade, a pep rally, bonfire, and fireworks presentation will be held. Free pizza and soft drinks will be served all evening. The Voltage Brothers, "a high energy band with a music selection to please everyone" will also be performing Friday night. Saturday's main event will be the WCU vs. VMI game. The pregame show will begin in Whitmire Stadium at 12:30 p.m. Kickoff is at 1:00 p.m. At halftime WCU will crown its' Homecoming Queen and for the first time, a Homecoming King. Elections for the court will be October 23, 1995 and the final vote for King and Queen will be October 25, 1995. Both elections will be on the UC Lawn. The festivities will be concluded in the Ramsey Center with Stompfest '95. Stompfest '95 will feature competing step teams from colleges and universities throughout the southeast.. "Stepping" is a form of dance drawn from African traditions which has been performed historically by African-American sororities and fraternities. The winner will walk away with a $1,000 prize.
