  • rMUfcm lHcVvtblbnNUAHuLINIAN/rr_tSHUMrir lo, ia.S» sports Western runs total to 11 signees Cats sign more »<" aUoan mAU U!»U ,..,.... . U ■ * ■— *■ ft recruits WCU has announced the signing of eleven more high school standouts to athletic grants-in-aid, including South Carolina's 4-A Back of the Year The new list of recruits announced by Bob Waters, WCU athletic director and head football coach, pushed to twenty-two the number of high school athletes commited to play for the Catamounts in the Southern Conference. "This group possesses a tremendous amount of athletic potential," said Waters. "We have added a lot of speed, ability and toughness," he added. Heading up the recent group of signees is Anthony James, South Carolina's Back of the Year last season while playing at Hartsville High. The 5-10, 165 pound tailback was one of the most widely acclaimed football players in the South this past season. In addition to first team all-state honors, he was selected to the coveted All-Southern team and turned in an outstanding performance in the Shrine Bowl game in Charlotte last December. He rushed for 104 yards in 16 caries in helping South Carolina's prepsters to a win over the North Carolina all-stars. Don Powers, Western's defensive coordinator, recruited and signed James and says the highly-touted athlete is "tailor-made for our offense." "He is extremely quick and elusive and has unlimited potential. We are excited about landing a player of Anthony's ability," said Powers. James rushed for over 1,300 yards and scored 19 touchdowns last season for Hartsville High. He was also an all-state performer in track and field last spring when he won the state title in both the long and triple jump. The tailback slot was a problem spot for the Catamounts last fall and Waters and his staff recruited extensively to shore up the position. In addition to James, Western also signed two other runners with impressive credentials and explosive speed—Leonard Williams of Eastern Guilford High and Stanley Hill of Newnan (GA) High. Williams was Guilford County's offensive player of the year as he rushed for 1,468 yards and scored 18 touchdowns. He was also named the player of the year in the Triad 3-A Conference. He was recruited and signed by WCU assistant Don Dalton who labels the 6-1, 165 pounder "one of the most exciting players we have ever signed. He can run with power and great speed and is an excellent kickoff and punt returner and catches the ball extremely well." Hill is one of the largest tailbacks ever signed by Western at 6-1, 185 pounds. He also lined up as a flanker for Newman High and was an outstanding track star. Bobby Pate, WCU assistant coach, says Hill possesses "excellent speed and physical attributes. He has the athletic ability to play a number of positions for us and is a product of a highly successful program that has turned out a number of college players.'' Western has also landed a pair of prize ends—Wendell Moore and Felix Smith—off Aiken (SC) High's undefeated team of last fall. Moore was a starter at defensive end in the Shrine Bowl last December. He played both split end and defensive end at Aiken High and was selected as the Augusta Area Player of the Year and first team all-state after leading his team to the South Carolina 4-A playoffs. "Wendell is one of the most talented defensive players we saw last year, but we plan to use him as a receiver next year," said Powers. "He has excellent speed and hands and is one of the largest receivers we have ever signed at 6-3, 195," he added. The other Aiken player casting his lot with the Catamounts is tight end/defensive end Smith. The 6-3 215 pounder is described by Powers as "a very intense athlete with excellent credentials on the field and in the classroom and impressed us with his speed, quickness and leadership potential." He was named to the 4-A all-region team. A pair of physically impressive prepsters have been recruited for Western's offensive line that was hit hard by graduation. 6-2. 220 pound Zach Spencer was heavily recruited at Lithia Springs (GA) High before he was signed by WCU's Pate. "Zach has the size, quickness and strength we are looking for in our linemen and is a quality student/athlete," said Pate. Kurt Jolliff, 5-11, 218 pounds, helped Gaffney (SC) High to an unbeaten regular season and the state 4-A semifinals. The offensive guard was named to the all-region team and was selected to play in the South Carolina prep All-Star game last December. The Catamounts have also added a pair of defensive backs—Steve Marshall of Abbeville (SC) High and iviauiKi. i aic wn jxim/siuwii s Kagsdale High. Marshall, signed by WCU assistant coach Don Millwood, was voted the outstanding back in South Carolina's All-Star game in December. The 6-10, 167 pounder was an outstanding quarterback for Abbeville High, but is slated for defensive backfield duty at Western. Pate is also a baseball and basketball standout at the Guilford County school. He was signed by WCU assistant Don Dalton who says the 5-11, 155 pounder has "great speed and all the abilities we are looking for in a defensive back." Walter Smith, a versatile athlete out of Atlanta's Lakeside High, has signed with WCU as a wide receiver. The outstanding student/athlete played four positions last season and also excelled as a return specialist He was one of nine players to sign with a major college off the North Georgia championship team and is described by Pate as "an extremely tough player with outstanding speed and hands." The first fullback signed by the Catamounts during the current recruiting season is Greg Thompson of Effingham County High in Springfield, GA The 6-10, 195 pounder was signed by Waters who says he was impressed with Thompson's "size, speed, strength and blocking ability and he also ranks in the top five percent of his class academically. "Generally speaking, we are having a good recruiting year," says Waters. "We are still looking for a few more big linemen and we hope to sign them in the very near future," noted Waters.
