  • Sports The Western Carolinian Page 10 Thursday, November 2, 1989 Southern Conference Predictions by Perryn Oglesby and the sports staff Perryn Oglesby Western Carolina At GeorgiaTech The Catamounts of Western will be heading down to Atlanta, GA to face the Yel- lowjackets of the Atlantic Coast Conference this weekend. This out-of-conference game will be important to help Western to build up some confidence before taking on three Southern Conference teams. Georgia Tech is also looking to gain some momentum for the remainder of their schedule. The Jackets have played well most of the season, and pulled off one of the biggest wins in GA Tech history when they defeated nationally-ranked Clemson. Western is coming off of a Homecoming loss to Conference rival Furman last week. The Catamounts will be fired up for this one and should give G A Tech all they can handle. Tech, however, should survive in the end and win by at least 10.(27-17) Fred Mason Marshall at Appalachian State This game may be the best of the week. Marshall won last week 40-10 over VMI, while App State defeated Tenn-Chatt 41 -7. Both teams are 3-2 in the Conference and both must win to have a chance to catch Conference-leading Furman. App State has a strong running game led by Richie Mel- chor. Melchor rushed for close to 200 yards last week and set a new single-game rushing mark forthe Mountaineers. Marshall will counter with All-Conference runningback Ron Darby and quarterback John Gregory. The Thundering Herd is explosive on offense, but may be suspect on the defensive side of the ball. App State should overpower Marshall late and pull out a nail-biter by 4. (28-24). Tenn-Chatt. at Furman Chattanooga is coming off a blowout loss to App State last week. The Mocs gave up 41 points and only managed 7 of their own. Things will not get any/ better this week when UTC faces Conference-leading Furman. Fu rman is coming off of a big win over Western, 17-3, and is rolling through the Conference schedule. This week should be no different. Furman will win by 17 over UTC (24-7). Sanford at the Citadel The Citadel has fallen out of the division 1 -AA Top 20 poll and also from the Conference race. Last week they lost a close one to E. Tenn. State, 35- 33, and it may have crushed any hopes of a Southern Conference title. The Citadel can only regroup and play hard for the remainder of the season. The role of spoiler is left, but first they must take on out-of- conference opponent Stanford. The Citadel will win this one convincingly by at least 21. (28-7). E. Tenn State at William and Mary ETSU has been playing well and is currently in second place in the Southern Confer ence. With a big win last week over The Citadel, the Buccaneers will be looking to knock off 12th ranked nationally William and Mary. William and Mary has been in the division 1-AA Top 20 all year and is slowly climbing into the top 10. This game is important to both teams. If a team does not win their respective conference than out off conference games may determine whether or not they make the playoffs. ETSU will come out on top in a close game by 3. (27-24). Davidson at VMI This game is up for grabs. VMI has not won this year and is 0-8. Davidson has not done much better. Davidson is formerly of the Southern Conference, but has elected to drop division levels in recent years. It may sound funny, but VMI should overpower Davidson in the second half. The home field advantage will not hurt VMI's chances either, and VMI will win by 10. (17-7). s Shawn Busby Tony Bolick GREEN'S SHELL J^ TOWING AND ROAD SERVICE • Full Car Service • Offering Complete Auto Maintenance • Check Our Tire Prices (with each set purchased, free mounting, balancing and tire rotation) Asheville Highway In Sylva, Below McDonalds 586-9220 or 586-6629 Southern Conference at a Glance Conf.
