  • TUESDAY MAY 6, 1975 THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN Page 7 Sex reform bill to change laws (CPS) — Like most Americans, Californians who have engaged in oral copulation, sod- omv, adultery, cohabitation or anv other "crimes against nature" are liable for prosecution under state law and could face imprisonment for over a vear. State legislator Willie Brown has introduced a bill which would remove criminal penalties for such acts and legalize all private sexual activity between consenting adults," Brown said. The sex reform bill is primarily aimed at eliminating archaic laws under which police can continually harass the gay community. Although rarely enforced, present California law also forbids oral sex « even between married people — and "living together" arrangements. If the measure passes, its advocates hope that government expenditures for vice squad activities could be drastically-reduced throughout California, and other states inspired to similar action. "The police of this state are spending far too much time trying to catch persons who violate some antiquated notions of sexual conduct, "saidBrown. "The policeman should be free to fight real crime — murder, robbery and mugging." Librarian gives vies Dear Editor: A few thoughts on respon= sibility towards library books. I have always loved books and wanted to share the best ones with everybody. Therefore, it does not surprise me that I have ended up working in a library. After all, a library is a place where books on every conceivable subject are housed for safekeeping and sharing. In a library a single book can be recycled countless times, saving each individual the time and expense of tracking down and purchasing every book she or he wants to read. In a library one should be able to find all of the best- both the classics and the current. Not at Western. In this library all the best books are stolen. Since I have started working here I have ordered scores of excellent books on different subjects, mostly of Contemporary interest or use« fulness. I am afraid to tell anyone about them or write them up in the Hunter Library notes,, or try to have them displayed because I am afraid they will be stolen. In fact, I am getting to the place where I hate to put them on the shelves—a most unlibrarianlike stile of mind. So how about it folks? Think about sharing for a change. Wouldn't you like to Know about some of the neat books we've been getting? Marina Bokelman Hunter Library P,S, These are my own o- pinions and have nothing to do with library policy.
