  • Sports November 12, 1981 Page 17 WCU Barbell Club Impressive Over the years the Barbell Club at WCU has been one of the most unheralded organizations on campus, yet one of the most successful. Those members actively competing have consistently placed high in local, state, regional, and even national events. The Club has produced many nationally ranked powerlifts and body-builders. The current fall semester greatly exemplifies the Barbell Club's success. At the North Carolina Powerlifting Championships recently held in Greensboro, current and former Western WCU students won three of the eleven weight classes powerlifting has, and placed second in two others. At the Mr. North Carolina Physique Championships, 5'9"-200-pound freshman Gene Howell, of Lenoir, easily won the teenage division. Though Gene is only a freshman, he has the physique of experienced veterans ten years older than he. This fact is easily attested to when you see him working and training for meets. Another successful Catamount body-builder is junior Steve Williams from Winston-Salem. Though Steve did not enter the Mr. North Carolina meet this year, he has always finished impressively in the contests he has entered. The current powerlifting "line-up" of the WCU Barbell Club starts with Kevin Kaga, a junior from Raleigh at 5'3"and a weight of approximately 150. Kevin is currently ranked second in the state in the 148 pound class. Kevin is most proficient at the squat, a lift where the lifter takes the weighted bar off a set of racks and, upon a signal from a judge, does a deep knee bend, then drives it back up. On this lift Kevin has gotten 480, weighing only 148. Kevin has also been credited witha460deadliftat the same weight. Next is Ross Depencier, a sophomore from Southern Pines. Ross is now ranked number one in the state in the 181 pound class. Instantly noticeable because of his outstanding physique, Ross is known primarily for his excellant bench press. At this lift, Ross has gotten 390, and his current goal is to break the state record which now stands at 430. Imagine benching 430 weighing only 181! In the 198-pound class, at only 57", is David Bost, a senior from Charlotte and WCU's best lifter. David currently has four state squat records and one record in the total to his credit. David's best meet was in December of '80 when he squatted an incredible state record of 690, benched over 400, and deadlifted 610 for the state record total of 1705. During a meet last May, David moved up temporarily to the next class, the 220's, and set some North Carolina powerlifting history by attempting to squat more than anyone else ever has. The weight was a stunning 775, and though not successful, was quite close. Try to imagine 775 pounds resting on your shoulders. Next in the line-up is another Charlotte native, Rob Bumgarner. Rob is an all-around steady lifter, competing in either the 220 or 242 pound class. Rob regularly and routinely squats and deadlifts over 600 in the meets he enters, and was also one of WCU's first lifters to bench 400 plus. Rob was also an outstanding football player during his days at Olympic High School. At super-heavyweight is Clay Lovelace, WCU's largest lifter at 6'3" and 280 pounds. Clay is the state's number one heavyweight, a position which he easily obtained at the North Carolina Power Lifting Championships. At this meet. Clay squatted 680 lbs., benched 460, and deadlifted 630. Clay is also the only person at Western Carolina to ever bench press 500 lbs. Perhaps Clay's biggest accomplishment, however, was placing third at last years Collegiate National Championships. from page 1 « appointed entirely by President Long. The only recourse for anyone interested in avoiding this evident conclusion would be to Chancellor Robinson. If you would like to see a different distribution or challenge the likely outcome, contact him. Postponed until next week were the review of the Traffic and Security Department, and the issue of RA's charging for students to be admitted to their rooms after being locked out. Those concerned about Traffic and Security issues or any revisions which would benefit students here at Western should not hesitate to mention it to your dorm senator, commuter senator, or senator-at- large as soon as possible. Next week's meeting promises to be of more concern to the student body as a whole-these issues affect all of us-please take part. WHOA! DOWN WATERHOLE DELI 121 S.
