  • WESTERN CAROLINIAN NEWS February 07, 2001 public safety hi q h 1 i q January 30 At 7:50 a.m., officers assisted a graduate student by unlocking a classroom in Belk. At 3:35 p.m., officers cited a female non-student for speeding 44 in a 20 mph zone on Catamount Road. At 4:00 p.m., a student reported that someone had broken a bug shield from his vehicle while it was parked near Benton Hall between 1/28 and 1/30. At 5:20 p.m., a female non-student turned in a wallet she found in the parking lot at Wal-Mart. The owner, a WCU, student was notified. At 8:00 p.m., officers attended a housing staff meeting in Walker. At 4:50 p.m., a student reported that her laundry had been stolen from a dryer in Scott. The property was left in the laundry for two days; At 11:56 p.m., an unknown person reported that a police officer was needed on the fourth floor of Scott. Officers found nothing unusual when they arrived. January 31 At 10:00 a.m., officers took a report of a tree falling across two vehicles parked in the water treatment plant parking lot. The vehicles belonged to staff members. At 1:10 p.m., checked On the welfare of a former female student at some off- campus apartments at the request of the' father. Officers were unable to locate the daughter. At 3:45 p.m., officers took a report from a faculty member in Stillwell regarding the faculty member repeatedly finding an area unsecure that is supposed to be kept secure. At 6:15 p.m., officers responded to a disturbance in the old motorpool parking lot between students. At 6:40 p.m., officers received a report from a male student in Leatherwood who had accidentally left his cat card on his tray in Dodson. Officers assisted him in getting his card canceled. At 8:00 p.m., officers charged a male with speeding 40 in a 20 mph zone and also failure to carry registration card. At 10:50 p.m., officers assisted with a female student in Scott who had passed out. The student was transported by WCU EMS. At 11:30 p.m., officers received a report of harassing phone calls from a female student in Buchanan. February 1 At 1:05 p.m., officers responded to a fire alarm in the ceramics lab in Belk caused by sanding in the room. At 8:12 a.m., officers responded to a fire alarm on the third floor of Benton caused by a loose detector head. At 11:07 p.m., officers referred three students to Student Affairs for alcohol violations on the fourth, fifth, and sixth floors of Scott Hall. At 11:20 p.m., officers arrested a male student for underage possession of alcohol on the fifth floor of Scott Hall. At 1:45 a.m., officers responded to a request for an ambulance behind Harrill where a female student had passed out from drinking too much. The subject was unresponsive and was transported to Harris Regional for treatment. She was treated and released. February 2 At 7:45 a.m. on 2/2, a faculty member reported the theft of bricks from the plaza at Hunter Library. Officers found approximately 6 bricks missing. At 8:00 a.m. on 2/2, housing staff reported the theft of a rubber tree from Buchanan Hall. The tree is valued at $700. At 2:08 p.m. on 2/2, officers cited a male student for speeding 43 mph in a 20 mph zone. At 6:00 p.m. on 2/2, officers delivered an emergency message to a student on the second floor of Benton Hall. At 9:16 p.m. on 2/2, officers responded to a fire alarm on the first floor of Albright. While there, they detected an odor of marijuana in the hallway which may have caused the alarm. At 9:17 p.m. on 2/2, a student reported that her keys had been stolen from the lobby of Helder. At 11:21 p.m. on 2/2, officers responded to an activated call box at the jogging trail. A student had lost his keys. On 2/3 the student reported that he had found his keys. February 3 At 9:00 a.m. on 2/3, a local resident reported a burglary, larceny, and vandalism at the Lambda Chi house. Officers secured a search warrant for the Theta Xi House, served the warrant, and confiscated items which were stolen from the Lambda Chi House. The investigation is continuing. At 10:22 a.m. on 2/3, officers were advised that a WCU student had been committed to a treatment facility for alcohol abuse. At 10:30 p.m. on 2/3, housing staff reported the odor of marijuana on the fifth floor of Harrill. Officers could not locate the source of the odor. At 11:45 a.m. on 2/3, the manager of GJ's Pizza-reported a suspicious transaction involving a WCU purchase order. Officers investigated and believe the transaction was legitimate.. February 4 At 1:00 a.m. on 2/4, officers assisted Jackson County deputies with a fight at Valhalla Apartments. At 3:03 a.m. on 2/4, officers responded to a report of a fight on the third floor of Walker. Officers pursued two males who ran from the area into the laundry room. No fight was located, but the two students are referred to student affairs for attempting to elude police officers. At 8:50 a.m. on 2/4, Jackson County deputies requested assistance in searching for a former WCU student who had been dropped off at the jail by Cherokee Police. At 12:46 a.m. on 2/4,.officers responded to an activated call box at Harrill and found no one in the area. At 3:40 p.m. on 2/4, officers responded to an activated call box at the jogging trail and found no one in the area. At 4:55 p.m. on 2/4, officers responded to an activated call box at Hunter Library and found several juveniles in the area. At 1:20 a.m. on 2/5, officers stopped a vehicle with a head light out and arrested the driver for possession of marijuana. The driver was a male non- student. February 5 At 1:47 p.m., officers were called to Scott for fireworks being discharged outside the front of the building. No contact with suspects. At 1:47 p.m., officers found that someone had shot holes in the front window of Scott Hall probably with a pellet gun. Housing staff advised that the damage had been done last Thursday or Friday. At 2:05 p.m., a member of the faculty reported that his car had been struck by a hit & run driver in the Reid Lot. At 9:10 p.m., a Domino's Pizza delivery driver reported that a heat-wave bag and three pizzas were stolen from his vehicle while it was parked outside the Ramsey Center following the basketball game. At 10:13 p.m., officers received a report of the odor of marijuana on the eighth floor of Scott. While there they found a dog being kept in the residence hall, identified the owner, had the dog removed, and referred the incident to housing. The source of the marijuana odor was not located.
