  • cont. from page 5 North Carolina Association of Nursing Students aids in preparing student nurses for professional responsibilities. Some of the functions of the association are to encourage student participation in the activities and meetings of the local organization and prepare for membership in the American Nurses'Association. The NCANS also stimulates an interest in the National League for Nursing and its constituents. Students are encouraged to promote high educational and professional standards and broaden the members' horizons individually as members of society. Nutrition and Food Service Management Association is a campus organization for students in Nutrition or Food Service. It is open to any WCU student. Omega Psi Phi fraternity was founded in 1911 by three prominent students and a professor at Howard University in Washington, D.C. The fraternity is based on four cardinal principles: manhood, scholarship, perseverance, and uplift. The motto is "Friendship is essential to the soul." Organization of Ebony Students initiates an understanding of a together feeling in students interested in Black Awareness at Western Carolina University. Concerned with historical background, OES sponsors Black Awareness Week, as well as a literary publication, Neo-Blackness. Panhellenic Council was organized at WCU in 1966. The WCU Panhellenic Association is a part of the National Panhellenic Conference. Every sorority woman is a member of the Panhellenic Association. The council is composed of two delegates from each sorority on campus. The major responsibilities of the council are to establish and uphold the rules governing rush activities of all the sororities, to sponsor individual and group service projects, and to initiate other worthwhile campus activities. Phi Beta Lambda is a national organization for students at college and university level who are preparing for careers in business and industry or business education. One of its chief objectives is to develop strong aggressive leadership so that these future businessmen and women may participate more effectively in the business and community life. All business majors are eligible for membership. Phi Kappa Phi, founded in 1897 at the University of Maine, was organized to promote the pursuit of excellence in all fields of higher education. The society recognizes achievement by students and faculty through election to membership. It is open to scholars of character from all academic deisciplines. Phi Kappa Phi's programs and activities are designed to serve creatively as it strives for the realization of its motto: "Let the Love of Learning Rule Mankind." Phi Mu believes that the fraternity is a valuable extension of one's college life. Through Phi Mu's chapter development program, members have opportunity to discover a variety of talents and interests from the time they accept membership until they graduate. As a provisional member individuals have the opportunity to develop a real understanding of the meanings and traditions of Phi Mu. After initiation, Phi Mu's are encouraged to develop valuable leadership and management skills through active participation in various chapter and campus activities. Group involvement lets the individual gain a better understanding of one's self while sharing the rewards and challenges of college life with meaningful friends. Phi Mu is one of the oldest and largest college organizations for women. With our impressive record of progress and innovation Phi Mu will continue to add new chapters on forward moving campuses. Pi Kappa Alpha was founded on March 1, 1968, at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. The fraternity stresses high moral standards and scholarship. Pi Kappa Alpha, known as "PIKA" was chartered on the campus of Western Carolina on February 12,1967. The social highlight of the Pi Kappa Alpha year is the annual Dream Girl Weekend. Pi Alpha Theta was installed on May 20, 1970. This is an international honorary society in history. It is open to all students with a 2.7 overall average and a 3.1 in 12 semester hours or more of history. Associate status is open to students with an interest in history but without the academic standing for honors. 227-7243. Pi Kappa Phi was chartered at WCU in 1967. "Nothing shall tear us asunder" is the fraternity motto that members follow as they promote their ideals of fellowship, trust, scholarship, Christian manhood and citizenship. Known as the "Friendly Fraternity," their activities include intramural sports, an annual Rose Ball, Rat Fink Ball, and numerous charity drives. Pi Lambda Phi was founded locally in 1978. We bring in many new ideas to enlighten the Greek system at WCU. The "Pilams" strive for high scholarship, contributing to many charitable events and above all feel that their closeness in brotherhood is their main quality in the fraternity. The Pilams are proud to be recipients of the Presidents' Council Scholarship Trophy for the past four years. Presbyterian Student Fellowship seeks to glorify Christ on the campus of WCU through worship, study, and discussion. Service to others and warm friendly fellowship are among other attributes of the group. Presidents' Council is the governing body of the Greek letter social fraternities at WCU. It is composed of the president from each fraternity. The council serves as a form for discussion of problems and seeks to provide support and aid to all areas of the university. Psi Chi National Honorary Society is an organization interested in promoting an interest in and a study in psychology. To be a member you must maintain a 2.5 overall QPR and have a 3.0 in psychology. Ranger Platoon is open to all students interested in developing confidence in their leadership abilities and learning mountaineering and small unit operations techniques, while improving their physical conditioning and ability to survive under adverse conditions. Recreation Leadership Club supports the National, District, and State Associations for Health, Physical Education, and Recreation, the National Parks and Recreation Association, and the North Carolina Recreation Society, to awaken and stimulate interest and professional advancement in the fields of health, physical education, and recreation. Residence Hall Coordinating Council consists of the President and Vice- president of every Residence Hall Council. These people represent their halls on all concerns and have a direct line with the Director of Housing. This group programs for the halls, works with the hall staff, and writes proposals for the best interests of the halls. Residence Hall Council concerns itself mainly with the respective hall. Every wing is represented at the individual hall council. Sigma Kappas inherit friends and a whole new family of sisters. We grow through participation and contribution as we visit the Old Folks at the Webster Home, collect clothes and food for our adopted family, enjoy fun at Pike's Peak, Parents' Day, the Pie Throw, Ice Cream Eat, and many others. Through these countless activities sisters and pledges alike share laughter, tears, work and play. The violet as her flower and the pearl as her jewel, Sigma Kappa emphasizes high ideals, leadership, and scholarship as well as the social aspects of college life. Sigma Phi Epsilon was founded was founded in 1901 and has grown to become the second largest among 60 national fraternities. Over 70% of our chapters continue to rank in the top half on their campuses. The brothers of Sigma Phi Epsilon invite you to become a member of the Greek system. Social Work Association fully explores and gains practical experience in the field of social work. Membership is open to any interested student. Society of Manufacturing Engineers is a professional organization open to anyone with an interest in manufacturing and other technical subjects. Membership is open to the student body and any faculty member. Sociology Club promotes interest in the fields of sociology, anthropology, and social welfare. It is open to all students with majors or minors in sociology, anthropology or social welfare, providing them with opportunities to interchange ideas and to associate with others having similar interests. awareness and understanding of the political and legal environment through the sponsorship of films, speakers, and seminars. Membership is open to all students. Student Council for Exceptional Children is a division of the Council for Exceptional Children which works to advance the education of all exceptional children and youth, both gifted and handicapped. This student chapter is open to any student at WCU interested in better understanding the problems related to exceptional children. Student Emergency Care Team (SECT) consists of six persons from various majors. It is a volunteer emergency ambulance service that works with the University and Jackson County. The service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week when the University is in session. The requirements for membership are a current NCEMT certification and a concern for Emergency Medical Care. Student Government Association is an integral function of the student body. Its purpose is to promote the interest of the student body while acting as a liaison between the administration and the student body. It relies totally on the input of active students who exercise their right to participate in the functions of student government. SGA also provides the students of the University with legal assistance through the office of the Director of Legal Assistance, and is responsible for providing numerous other services to the University community such as a Refrigerator Leasing Program, and the funding of various clubs and organizations. Student National Education is the student branch of the National Education Association. It helps prepare more alert students today for better teachers tomorrow. Tau Beta Sigma promotes the existence and welfare of the university bands and cultivates a wholesome respect for their activities and achievements. The sorority honors outstanding women who participate in WCU bands through the privilege of membership, which is open to all students participating in band regardless of academic major. Tau Kappa Epsilon is a select group of men with similar ideals, hopes and purposes bonded together by deep friendship and mutual understanding. Tau Kappa Epsilon has a spirit of genuine democracy and chooses its members "not for wealth, rank, or honor, but for personal worth and character." Theta Xi provides a university home environment for its active members in which fellowship and alumni guidance leads to wholesome mental, moral, physical and spiritual growth. Wesley Foundation is the student organization of the United Methodist Church. The purpose of the Wesley Foundation is to provide a living vital Christian experience for people of the university community. WCU Latter-Day Saints Association offers a full program of religious instruction, social activities and service projects. College-level religion classes to all interested are taught by WCU faculty members who are members of the Church. Social activities are organized by the student officers of the association. Western Gold is an organization of WCU students who work with the Admissions Office recruiting high school seniors and two-year college transfer students. The purpose of this organization is to promote a positive attitude toward WCU in prospective students, their parents, enrolled students, and alumni. The members of Western Gold coordinate Fall Open House, participated in alumni/student recruitment meetings, ROTC Day, History Day, Spring Telethon, Band Day, alumni gatherings, and campus tours. To be selected as a member of Western Gold is an honor. All members are nominated by faculty, staff, and active members. Those students selected must exhibit a positive attitude toward WCU, a willingness and desire to meet new students, good communication skills, and a thorough knowledge of the University. Zeta Tau Alpha of WCU is active in nearly all phases of campus life. Look around - you'll find us in the band, SGA, Miss Catamount Pageant, Homecoming Court, women's sports, Pike's Peak, Greek Week, Lambda Chi Alpha Kidnap, chorus, and residence hall activities, as well as the many clubs and organizations on campus.
