Leaves begin to fall off the trees and clutter the steps, firewood is stacked on the front porch for those chilly days ahead, and pumpkins are placed on the doorstep for decor as Halloween nears. Staff Photo By Mark Haskett "Wait Until Dark" Opens, Received Enthusiastically The WCU production of Wait Until Dark, by Frederick Knott, premiered Tuesday night in the Little Theatre. This play, which tells the story of a blind woman's struggle against three men trying to search her Greenwich Village apartment for a heroin-filled doll, was received enthusiastically by all who say it. A year before the action takes place, Suzy Hendricks was in a car accident and has been blind ever since. Her husband, Sam, has been trying to teach her to take care of herself, so she would not have to depend on otheis. However, she has a little girl, Gloria, who shops for her. Gloria has been battered by her parents "like a sawed-off shuttlecock." so she sometimes takes out her frustrations on Suzy by rearranging the furniture, and has been known to steal things. Sometimes, however, she can be very helpful. At the beginning ofthe play, Mike Talman and Sgt. Carlino break into the apartment, one after the other. They once had been partners in crime, and Carlino has just gotten out of prison. They are talking about their own affairs when Harry Roat, Jr. comes to the door, and after some discussion, persuades them to help him find a heroin-filled doll which supposedly is in the apartment. They make their plans, and then put them into action. Talman comes to Suzy, saying that he is a friend of Sam's, and Sgt. Carlino impersonates a detective, as he has done several times before. Then Roat comes in disguised as Harry Roat, St.. asks for Sam Hunt, takes a wedding photograph out of the bedroom, then runs out saying that he will kill Hunt if he does not leave Mrs. Roat alone. Talman comes in just as Roat is leaving, and supposedly calls the police. These are the beginnings of their plans to find the doll, and Suzy starts to figure them out. She cannot depend on anyone to help her because Sam is away, and Gloria can only do so much. Therefore, the major theme of the play concerns Suzy's learning to take care of herself. Suzy Hendricks is played by Lynn Brannon, who was very convincing as a blind person. She was at her fines in her fight with Roat at the end of the play, displaying true courage in the face of death. She had the hardest part in the play, and did very well. Scott Shearon, who played Sam Hendricks, did well as the stubborn husband who would not let his wife fail. He always gave her a challenge, and she certainly lived up to it. Gloria is played by Heather Evans, who did particularly well when enraged. Suzy called her "Four- Eyes," a name the other children gave her son after she got glasses. She could not take it, so she began throwing everything which was unbreakable. This was something Gloria had learned from her parents, who frequently had fights. Richard Dudley and Howard Allman played Mike Talman and Sgt. Carlino, respectively. They both were very good in their roles as crooks who were forced to follow someone else's plans. They tried to get all they could out of it, but ultimately were not as bad as Roat. Allman was successful in giving Sgt. Carlino a comic touch, and Dudley countered by being calm and collected. The only real problem with the play was in line delivery.
