  • IAN NEWS September 29,1999 September 21 At 11:20 p. m., officers assisted Jackson County deputies who were trying to find Housing for a female who was sleeping in her car at WalMart. The female had identified herself as a student: however, it was found that she was not. At 9:54 p. m., officers initiated a traffic stop on a male student and charged him with failure to carry his operator's license. During the stop, it was found that he was wanted by the Jackson County Sheriff's Department for possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of marijuana. He was taken into custody. September 22 On 9-20, a male student charged with DWLR and reckless driving plead guilty. He was given 45 days suspended for a year, $200 fine and court costs, and ordered not to operate a motor vehicle in NC until licensed. At 1807, officers responded to Harrill Parking lot in response to requests from a group of students concerned about a dog which had been hit by a car. The dog was a black dachshund. The dog died. A shovel was found for some of the students who took the dog to a location off campus and buried it. At 1813, officers responded to Harrill where the right elevator was stuck on the 5th floor. Subjects had already removed themselves from the elevator and the power was turned off to the elevator until it could be repaired. At 2032, officers responded to Harrill in reference to the other elevator malfunctioning. Three students were helped to exit the elevator and power was turned of the elevator. September 24-26 Officers provided traffic control and police patrol for Mountain Heritage Day including the concert by Doc Watson at the Ramsey Center on Friday night and Saturday. No crimes were reported in connection with the events, but several visitors suffered bee stings on the field and one female visitor fell and apparently suffered a broken leg on University Way adjacent to the field. One ambulance call was also dispatched for a male student who found a black widow spider on his leg but was not bitten. University Governance continued from frontpage "How do we respond to them? The difficulty is that they come in anonymous," said Chaplain. "They are valid issues, but they come in anonymous." The committee recommended written responses to each inquiry, and task force member Dr. Bill Haggard suggested the committee attempt to find an existing human resource to handle written responses. "Most likely the chancellor's budget would support the request through individual funding," said Haggard. The committee next turned to focus on the upcoming elections process. "A great deal of students don't feel we have representative government, but a rubber stamp for the administration," said student task force member David Whitaker. Whitaker's hope is that the UAC will hope to change this outlook. "Students are not afraid to say what they think on this committee," Whitaker stated. The purpose of the forums in October is to allow for each constituent group to determine an election process for membership to the UAC. "What we want the campus to do is figure out the best way [to elect members]," stated Dr. Jane Hall, chair of the task force.
