  • Page 4 THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN THURSDAY FEBRUARY 13, 1975 That's progress? If progress comes in disguised forms, the new $2.16 million airport for Jackson County certainly is progress. We fail to see the need of such a tremendous construction except to curry favors to the local plane owners, whose number is minimal at most. Bruce Wike, chairman of the county board of commissioners, once hailed the project which he has primarily backed as one that would give jobs to the local population. Yet the highest estimate of jobs to be provided is 45 for local people. To spend $2.16 million for 45 two-year jobs is hardly a reasonable project. Jackson County will pay only $629,000 to finance the runway — the rest coming from federal and state gifts — but even that is too much for the return. It may be possible to build a landing between two mountain peaks, but we feel the project was sadly misplaced on the priority list. WCU's rescue team LETTER TO THE EDITOR Sirens wailed repeatedly Tuesday night as the student-staffed Cullowhee rescue squad answered a call. Fortunately the alarm was a false one — merely a test of the team's responsiveness. The students scored well on the test, and that certainly should give people here a lot of comfort knowing the services of the rescue squad are responsible and fast. Western's campus is a long drive from the E. J. Harris hospital in Sylva when someone is seriously injured. Many times WCU's ambulance squad has hurried people there in a remarkably fast and safe time. IllEr WeSTEC*! George McMahan Ladies' support low Dear Editor; As'I sat at the basketball game with ASU Monday night I looked around at the many students, various members of the faculty and community, and I listened to their loud cheering. I noticed the radio announcer, the exuberant cheerleaders, and the lively pep band. And then I asked myself, "Why is it no one supports the Women's Basketball team?" Their games are just as exciting, yet there is an average of 100, maybe 150, people at the women's games. The men played ASU and the gym was almost full. When the women played ASU there was approximately 250 people present (their largest crowd this year). If you watch or listen to games on TV the announcers are always Drug trials Dear Editor, Court time is coming up again in Sylva next week for the 20-some yet untried "drug dealers" of Cullowhee, many of which Don Crumley is responsible for their arrest. I am working on my defense and need all the help I can get. I have some information about Crumley's credibility, but any information you may have that might be helpful in a defense could save many people from going to prison for several years. Is it worth a little of your time, or has apathy reached a level so low in Cullowhee that your fellow students can be locked away without even so much as a care from their friends? We have another week left, so give me a call; I would like to talk to you. Thank you, Butch Palmer Box 1254 Cullowhee 293-5078 talking about the home crowd and the affect they have on the players. If you've ever played any sport you know this is true. The players love to play at home in front of many cheering fans. The women never get the chance to do this, for only a few loyal fans come to their games. At Chapel Hill I was amazed at the number of people who came to the games. The Pep band and cheerleaders were even there and the spirit the crowd had was tremendous. The women spend long hard hours in practice because they love to win. They also love a crowd cheering them on to victory, and supporting them when they are losing. It is past time for the women to receive support from the students, faculty, and community. Their last home game was Wednesday, Feb. 12, with Mars Hill. I wish they could receive the kind of support they have long deserved. Sincerely, Pollye Pruitt Food Day refreshing Dear Editor: In an age characterized by apathy and synicalism the concern shown by many for the World Food Crisis is certainly refreshing. The World Food Day sounds like one of the most exciting things that has happened in Cullowhee in a long time. I hope this is only a beginning of involvement and concern toward the inhumanity to man of our days. Counterfeit Dear Students: Left and Right are two sides of the same coin. The coin is counterfeit. The coin is Leadership, All Leadership is counterfeit, Empty benches, empty halls. Hordes of organizers-in-waiting; no volunteers to be organized. When leaders have no one left to lead, what will they do? Sidney Simon 16 Ospringe Road London NWS 2JE As a committed believer in the Lord Jesus Christ I pray I will always minister to needs of people wherever I find them. For the benefit of Christians participating in the World Food Day I would like to share something Jesus told His disciples Matthew 6:16-18. "Moreover when you fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, they have their reward. But you (his disciples) when you fast anoint your head and wash your face: that you appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father which is in secret and thy father, which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly." In other words, "don't toot your horn," saying look at me I'm fasting" but rather be quiet and pray seeking the Lord and His will. In Christ, Roger Wall ^WTf THE
