The number of University of Notre Dame freshmen qualifying for the Dean's List has virtually doubled, according to Dr. William Miller Burke, dean of the Freshman Year of Studies. Whereas 105 freshmen achieved the Dean's List during the 1962-63 academic year, there were 208 first-year students on the honor list last year after one semester. Twenty of these, Dean Burke's report disclosed, were "straight A" students, an increase of twelve over the preceding year. On the other hand, the number of freshmen on academic probation has dropped about 25% since 1962-63. Dean Burke reported there were an additional two hundred freshmen who had a respectable "B" or 3.0 or better average, but who did not quite meet the Dean's List requirement of 3.25. In all, he said, 408 or 28% of Notre Dame's 1,550 freshmen had a "B" average or better. In Dean Burke's opinion, the freshmen's academic success can be attributed to the following principal factors: an active counseling program which identifies a student's areas of strentgh and weakness at the outset of his college career; and the use of more experienced teachers for freshman classes. The counseling program involves eight veteran faculty members for a minimum of 175 hours per week, Dean Burke said, and the new students are first grouped into potential academic categories before the counseling begins. This is the result of much work by the Student Senate since it has been a pet peeve on this campus for quite awhile. An extra added feature will be a separate number for each phone. Question: What do you think installation of phones on each floor of the dormitory, and each phone having a separate number? Steve Pruett; Senior, Asheville, N. C. "It'll work out fine. We can have phone booth packings on all floors then." Henry Greene; Junior, Shelby, N. C. "We won't be a bit better off!" Jim Martin; Ridgewood, N. J. "If the people can assume the responsibilities, then it's a good idea." Trina Lane; Junior, Spindale, N. C. "1 want one in my room." Anita McRash; Freshman, Durham, N. C. "It is definitely needed; the situation in Moore is ridiculous." Mike Ambrose; Sophomore, Charlotte, N. C. "I don't think people would answer them. But it sounds good." Tony White; Freshman, Asheville, N. C. "All for it! !" Mike Culp; Sophomore, Charlotte, N. C. "I think it's good; communication will be faster and easier both on and off campus." Marty Oates; Senior, Gastonia, N. C. "I don't believe it until I see it." Shirley Jackson; Jacksonville, N. C. "It's great! It's wonderful!" Barry Stegall; Sophomore, Draper, N. C. "I think its bad. Too much phone duty." Mike Powers, Sophomore, Lincolnton, N. C. "Maybe now you can get to a phone." Charles Ratcliff; Freshman, Waynesville, N. C. "I think it will speed communication." Chet Gatlin; Senior, Atlanta, Georgia. "I think it is good but could possibly be somewhat useless unless additional circuits are installed from Cullowhee to Sylva."
