western ■• • arolinian Cathouse Band Honored by Stacey Ruiz Western Carolina University's Cathouse Band has been voted the best basketball pep band in the Southern Conference, according to a recent poll of conference basketball coaches and administrators. The Greensboro News & Record conducted the poll, and on February 26, the newspaper showcased the band in an article titled "An Insider's Guide to What's What in the Southern Conference." The article lauded the band's dedication by noting that "when Western was on Christmas break, the Cathouse Band wasn't. Members came back to campus for home games in late December and early January, and nobody was surprised." The article also mentions the traditional singing of the "Fat Lady" upon a Catamount victory. The Cathouse Band performed for the last time this season in Greensboro, at the WCU men's and women's Southern Conference Tournament games on February 26-27. The honor does not come as a surprise to many people who have seen the 80-member ensemble perform. "The Cathouse Band is head and shoulders above any other basketball band in the Southern Conference, and right up there with the best in the nation," said WCU men's basketball coach Phil Hopkins. "Not only are they good musicians, they are dedicated and full of enthusiasm. They are our team's biggest fans and our team is their big- ges^fan," he said. However, the honor goes not only to the band members but also to several people and groups that help to create the atmosphere of enthusiasm. Coach Hopkins said that not only band members but band director Bob Buckner, the WCU Dance Team and dance team director Donna Buckner "are to be applauded for their first-class organization that epitomizes the spirit of the college experience."
