  • WESTERN CAROLINIAN EDITORIAL November 17,1999 Editorial Before you lash out, Let us explain by Seth R. Sams News Editor By the time you reach this page, most have surely huffed and puffed over this week's front page issue dealing with an alleged hazing, reported just recently. Some will write the Western Carolinian prior to the Christmas break, and will repeatedly tell the Carolinian staff how incompetent they are. This will surely be fol- lowed by remarks concerning "public service," and the many positive roles played by Greek organizations at this university. Just to head-off such accusations, everyone should know that no one is trying to contest the fact that Greeks play a significant role on campus, and that they do quite a bit of good work throughout the local community. They do. Yet, a story on hazing is a story that will pop up in every news section for years to follow, and has been in at least one issue every year in the past. Certain years, there were multiple stories about hazing incidents. Whether anyone likes it or not, hazing is an issue on this campus and almost every other campus in America. Since that is the case, the Carolinian has no choice but to cover such allegations, especially allegations that very well may lead to a lawsuit. The choice the Carolinian has made is not to make this an attack on Greeks. Seth R. Sams It is not. If anything, one would hope that this issue being brought once again to the forefront should unite Greek organizations on campus to prevent hazing in the future, and to avoid any more situations like this one. It is true that Greeks have worked hard to deter hazing, including alcohol-related hazing. The Communications Director at the National Headquarters for Lambda Chi even stated that his organization spends somewhere around $400,000 every year towards curbing the use of hazing and alcohol in official functions involving new members. No matter the amount of effort put into ending hazing and alcohol use by fraternities, some might find loopholes, of sorts, in the policies made by fraternities concerning hazing. The university, however has its own definition of hazing, and violating the university's rules is usually followed by some strict penalties. The university's definition includes many criteria, but also, very simply, "alcohol use." So, members of Greek organizations may feel that the tine line they're being made to walk is unfair, and the administrations of universities and fraternities may think it is necessary. Either way, it is a problem. It is not the Carolinian's place to decide whether alcohol use in pledge related functions should or should not be allowed, but we do have to inform people of the facts as they are given to us by reputable sources, so that Greeks, administrators, and independant students can all understand the problem and make their own decisions and judgments. That's all we want to do. That's really all we CAN do.
