  • October 17, 2001 SPORTS 15 Cats Upend Socon Powers continued from back scoring early when Kate Dylag fired a deflection past Mandi Tinsley in the 13th minute. Greensboro would hold that lead the rest of the half. The second half saw Western tie the score quickly, with a goal at 49:33 when Nardia Moore put away a cross by Brandy Ossman to even the score at 1-1. This score would hold until, in the 110th minute, Lauren Bramlett scored on her first shot of the day. Head coach Debbie Hensley was very proud of her squad's historic effort and feels this could catapult them for the rest of the system. "This is the biggest win in our program's history," she said. "UNC Greensboro has been a dominant force in the Southern Conference and in the South Region for many years," she added. "Our team played their hearts out and I could not be more proud of them." The Lady Cats will next travel to Spartanburg to take on Wofford in Southern Conference action on Friday. Next, they will travel to Greenville to take on the Lady Paladins of Furman. The score was good enough for 15th place in the event. Senior Greg Lewis led the way for the Cats placing 27th with a 219 total, which included a one-under-par 70 on the second day of competition. Senior Lee Cline was next shooting a 222 that was highlighted by the best individual Western round, a final-day 69 on the par 71 layout. Cats Win Over Wofford continued from back 41-yard field goal, which tied his best career effort, to give the Cats a 24-14 advantage. The third quarter saw one more Catamount score, a two-yard touchdown plunge by sophomore Manny DeShauteurs. The play came on fourth down, the league-leading 12th conversion by Western, and capped a ten-play, 72-yard drive. Both teams where held in check in the fourth quarter until, with 6:30 left to play, Melvin Jones scored on a six- yard run to draw the Terriers to within ten at 31- 21. After Rowser missed a 33-yard field goal on the ensuing Western drive, Wofford marched eighty yards in 1:32 as Jones recorded his fourth touchdown run from 17 yards out with 1:58 left in the game. The onside kick attempt by Wofford was recovered by junior free, safety Justin Fryer, and WCU ran out the clock to hold on to their three-point win. Gaither finished the game 15-for- 27 for 203 yards and three touchdowns, playing his first complete game of the season. Banks, who was named Southern Conference offensive player of the week, caught nine passes for 111 yards and two touchdowns, which moved him into a ninth-place tie on the all-time school list with 14 career touchdown receptions. Boateng paced a rushing attack that was mostly stymied by Wofford defenders with 63 yards on 16 carries. Senior Donnie Bryant and DeShauteurs added 27 and 21 yards, respectively. Nick McNeil paced the defensive effort that held the Terriers in check for three quarters of the game. He recorded all three WCU sacks, totaling a loss of 37 yards. Junior linebacker Seth Hanssen added 11 tackles and Leach had nine tackles and fumble recovery to go along with his interception. Head coach Bill Bleil was quick to point out that his staff did not panic after the team's last two weeks, losing to Georgia Southern and Furman, and added that his squad played a great game in his eyes. "We've just had two really tough games against some really good teams," he said. "I really thought the photo by Mark Haskett /OPI Banks turns upfield after making a catch Saturday defense played great, they did a good job of making turnover. This is the best we've played at home this year." He also did not worry when his team began to relinquish the lead in the fourth quarter, citing their composure as the key to the win. "Those things happen," he said. "Wofford's a great offense. When things like that happen, you hope your players keep their heads about them and they did." McNeil felt that the preparation the squad put into the game was one of the key factors in the winning effort. "We decided we needed to come together," he said. "We did a lot of film this week. If we could get pressure on him (Wilson) in third and long situations, we could force him into some bad throws. Gaither added that the offensive effort was a conglomeration of all the players having solid performances. "We were clicking on all cylinders," he said. "The line was blocking great and the receivers were running great routes." Western will return to league action this Thursday when they travel to face the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. The Cats defeated the Mocs (2-3, 1-2) last year and UTC is coming off of a loss against the lowly VMI Keydets.
