Wate-rs has led tin- Catamounts eiut of the NA1A to a Hi vision 11 independent and finally into Division 1 of the- NCAA and a majeir competitor in the- Southern Conference, His accomplishments are- many and 147h is certain to add to Ins list of achievements. Robert in Waters played collegiate football at Presby- terian College in Clinton, SC. He led Presbyterian to the Tangerine Bowl in i960 where he- was named the- bowl's MVP. Waters was drafted by the San Prsncisco 49ers in 1960 in the seventh round. During his five-year career w ith the- 49e-rs, Waters fre- quently started as quarte-rback and played defensive back during the 1964 season. In 1966 Waters returned to Presbyterian as an assistant coach. After two years at Presbyterian, he- spent esne- year as a receiver coach for Sanford University. In 1969 Wate-rs came to WCU. During his first season at WCU, Waters coached the- Catamounts to a 9 and 1 record—the only loss ironically coming from Presbyterian in the last game of the season. Waters second best season ss as 1974 when he led the Catamounts to a 9 and 2 record and the NCAA Division II playoffs where WCU lost to top-ranked Louisiana Tech by three points. Under Waters WCU has experienced its greatest football success and growth in the history of the school. Today, Waters is WCU's athletic director as well as head football coach. Western, under Waters' direction, fields 14 varsity sports teams and is a strong competitor in the Southern Conference.
