The performance earned the Catamounts the 30th spot in the Collegiate Baseball Division I Baseball Poll. In the series finale on Sunday, WCU (19-6,5-1 SoCon) mounted a three-run rally in the top of the seventh inning to tie the Wildcats (4-19,1-5), 7-7. Western added a run in the eighth and ninth inning to complete the sweep. Donnie Suttles started the game but allowed seven runs, three of them earned, despite seven strikeouts, in the first four innings before Coach Rodney Hennon put Chris Waters on the hill. Waters (1-1) pitched five innings of three-hit baseball without allowing an earned run to keep the Catamounts' on top. The opening game on Sunday saw the Catamounts down following the first inning, 2-1. They tied the game in the second inning and then jumped in front, handily, with three runs in the fourth and five more in sixth to go up 10-2. Two more were added in the ninth as the Cats cruised to a 12-2 victory. The Cats used another sixth inning rally coupled with a four-run seventh to put away Davidson in the series opener on Saturday. Chuck Koone was the star for Western as he belted a grand-slam in the seventh, stole four bases, and scored four runs. Hennon commented, "We were up and down at Davidson and still managed to win because this team can overcome an occasional bad inning with its hard, battling effort." That's exactly what happened last Thursday when the Catamounts downed national powerhouse Clemson at Hennon Sta- dium/Childress Field. The Tigers jumped on the Catamounts and Brian Bain's pitching with three runs, including a two-run homer by Kurt Bultman, in the first inning. Western bounced back with a five-run bottom half of the first. Senior catcher Frankie Ward capped the scoring with a two-run blast. "Those five runs were really big," said Hennon, "It changed the entire complexion of the game." WCU added three more the following inning to go up 8-4 on the Tigers. Bain then settled down on the mound by allowing only three runs on two hits over the next three innings. "Bain was excited [for the Clemson game], too excited, and that showed in the first couple innings," said Hennon. "I knew we were definitely capable of scoring and Brian would settle down." When Erik Turnrose took the mound for the Catamounts in the top of the sixth inning, the Catamounts were clinging to an 8-7 lead. Turnrose pitched four innings of hit-free baseball while the team added two more insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth to seal the victory. Hennon said the Clemson victory was a confidence builder for the club. "When we play like this we're capable of playing with anyone," he said. 'Today proved that." The newly ranked Cats traveled to the University of Georgia to take on the Dawgs on Tuesday and have a match-up at UNC Asheville tonight. Western will return to Cullowhee for a three game set with VMI starting with a noon double-header on Saturday and a 1 p.m. contest Sunday. DUNNAHOE SHAW BACKS THE CATS!
