  • westerns* • arolinian Will the Computer Requirement Affect Student Support Services? By: Jaime Hodorovick With the new computer requirement, Western's campus will have to make a few changes. Some of these changes will affect Student Support Services. Student Support Services is mainly to help students with disabilities. With this computer requirement, the students, along with the teachers and services on campus, will have to be wired into the network. Student Support Services has already begun the transformation into the computer world. The department recently got three new computers, but their other computers are in desperate need of an update. The computers are way behind the others located on the rest of Western's campus. These computers are needed td accom modate the students' test and study skills. Without reliable computers working for the department, the students cannot receive the proper attention or care they need. Even if the department does get more computers, it still must face another problem. The department is understaffed, meaning there are not enough people to help those who seek help in their classes. If Student Support Services does acquire more computers, hopefully the department will be getting a bigger sum of money, too, to staff more employees. The students who use these services appreciate all of the work that the department puts in. This service is important to a lot of the students on this campus, because without these services, some students would not be able to make it through college alone. Our student teachers enjoy a day or afternoon off from student teaching to have this opportunity to hand out resumes, fill out applications and interview with some schools. Currently, 52 school systems and individual schools have registered to talk with our students. (A list of these school systems is available at: http://careers.wcu.edu )• This event is considered a recruitment opportunity. All students who are student teaching, are graduated teachers or are from the following masters' programs: Communication Disorders, Psychology, Counseling, Educational Administration and Educational Supervision are invited to attend. Participants should bring a resume and be prepared to be interviewed. Teacher Recruitment Day is Tuesday March 31, 1998, from 1 -4pm in the Ramsey Center Auxiliary Gym. Plan to arrive early, between 1 -2pm, for the best opportunities to speak with these employers. Teacher Recruitment Day is sponsored by the Career Services Office, 91 Mckee, x7134.
