  • 20 Western Carolinian February 2, 1995 Sports Big Lead, Lose to Appalachian Jason Queen Staff Reporter There's just something about Appalachian State that brings out the worst in Western Carolina athletics. The Mountaineer football team rolled into Cullowhee this fall and knocked the Cats out of Division I-AA playoff contention. Monday night, their basketball team crept into the Ramsey Center with only one conference victory and paraded off with a 94-85 win, knocking Western from first place in the Southern Conference standings. The game was a tale of two halves. Western dominated the first half but never could put App away. App then burst out of the locker room and dominated every phase of the game, out-scoring the Cats 53- 39 in the second half to secure the victory. Western stormed out of the gates early, jumping out to an 11-2 lead at the 15:30 mark. Johnny Scott played like a man possessed during this stretch, scoring six points and rejecting two shots. Western continued to play well the rest of the half, and Scott Scholtz' three-point play with six minutes left gave Western a comfortable 35-23 lead. The Cats led 41-31 at the three minute mark, but could not put App away for good. The Mountaineers closed the gap to five points, 46-41, at the Forward Scott Scholtz dunks for two points in WCU's loss to Appalachian Photo by Tyrone intermission. A key factor in App's ability to stick around was Western's inability to hit free throws—the Cats connected on just 6 of 11 from the stripe in the first half. The long-range shooting of Anquell McCollum was the primary reason Western was able to hold on to the lead at all. McCollum hit 4 of 6 from three-point land and ended the half with 15 points. Frankie King's free throw with 18:50 left to play extended Western's lead back to 10 points at 51-41. But again, the Cats could not put App away. McCollum hit two free throws with 11:39 left to push the lead to 63-55, but it was all Appalachian from there on out. App took its first lead of the night, 69-68, at the 6:58 mark on William Cook's three-pointer from the corner. Cook's three silenced the home crowd that had erupted just 20 seconds earlier after a monstrous dunk by Scholtz gave Western a two-point lead. Appalachian slowly pulled away from there. McCollum hit a three-pointer with 24 seconds left to cut App's lead to four, 89-85, but the Mountaineers hit their ensuing free throws to put the game on ice. NOTES: Western remained tied for first place in the South Division of the Southerm Conference thanks to UT- Chattanooga's loss at VMI Monday night. Both teams are 4-2 in the Conference ... King finished with 30 points on the night. McCollum added 27 and Scott finished with 10 points and four blocks ... Freshman Jarvis Graham continued to provide solid minutes off the bench, scoring four points and pulling down nine rebounds in just 14 minutes... App's Chad Mclendon dominated the inside game. He finished with 36 points and 15 boards... Things don't get any easier for Western as they travel to Davidson Saturday night and to Marshall Monday night...
