  • Page 9 Womens basketball downs Asbury 98-37 From Staff Reports Western Carolina wom- ens basketball opened the season with an exhibition game, defeating Asbury Uni- versity 98-37 Friday in the Ramsey Center. All 12 Catamount players saw action in the contest with five logging double figures in scoring. The starting line-up was as balanced as the team itself. Senior point guard Kendra Carroll got a starting nod along with juniors Cait- lin Hollifield and Kaila Shea Menendez and redshirt soph- omores Janae McKinney and Diamond Hunnicutt. Hunnicutt, who sat out the 2009-10 season, was one of the four Catamount players who led the team . with 13 points. Her second field goal in the game was a three-pointer, showing the . increased versatility of the Jonesboro, Georgia native. Hollifield, Menendez and Emily Clarke also had: 13 points in the game and McK- inney adding 11. The Cata- mounts had almost thrice the team rebounds as Asbury, 52 to 19, with freshman Alex Abraham leading the squad with eight. Asbuty kept the game close in the first four minutes. A jumper by the Eagles La- kin Griffith cut the Western Carolina lead to 10-6 at the 16 minute mark, than WCU went On an 11-3 run to build a 15 point lead, 24-9. Carrolls sister, Laura, is a sophomore guard for Asbury and poured in 10 points in the first half of the game. West- ern Carolina held Laura to just three points in the second half, as she ended the game with 13 points. Western Carolina led As- . bury 47-20 at the half with the first 20 minutes ending off a made jumper by fresh- man point guard Rena Waka- ma, who ended the game with nine points. Asbury scored the first basket of the second. half, a lay-up by Christy Gem- mell. After Asburys score, Western Carolina went on.a 16-5 run building a 34 point lead. In that time, Western Carolina was 5-of-6 from the free throw line and also got a three pointer by: Clarke. The lead for Western Car- -olina ballooned to 50 points with less than eight minutes left when freshman Kristen Lyon hit a jumper with 7:04 left. She ended the game with six points. ae Melanie Stewart, from nearby Franklin, N.C., logged nine minutes in the game scoring a point and also picked up a block. The Catamounts had 15 assists in the game and had eight steals. Menendez led the team with four assists and also topped the team with three steals.
