Western Carolina University's football team is off to its most impressive start since 1969 when the Catamounts rolled up nine straight victories. Obviously, the Catamounts would not have upset Murray State (21-12) and Tennessee Tech (31-13) without their prolific offensive show. However, coach Bob Waters anticipated his team would be able to move the football and score points. During the preseason period, though, he was not quite as confident about his team's defensive prowess. Today, the doubt in the WCU mentor's mind about the ability of his defensive crew has disappeared as he credits much of the Cats surprising success to the rebuilt unit. In the upset wins, the defense has caused the opposition to turn the ball over to WCU 13 times on 8 interceptions and 5 fumble recoveries. On the ground, the opposition has averaged 122 yards, one more per game than it has through the air. The statistics are not staggering, but Jie performances have been impressive because, as Waters explains, "our defense has not allowed the opposition to complete the big play which tends to give a team momentum, nor did it allow Murray or Tech to control the football. Just as with our offense, the defense has been a tre-. mendous third down team." Waters' right-hand man, defensive coordinator Don Denning, has been pleasantly , surprised about the defensive effort. "We lost four outstand- ing players through graduation and we felt it was going to be next to impossible replacing them," Denning said in reference to All-America tackle Steve Williams; three-year starters at ends, Les Herrin and Jim Dougherty; and four- year regular Jimmy Laughridge from the secondary. The front line has been rebuilt around another All- America candidate, tackle Mike Cater, and converted middle guard Keith Gosnell at the other tackle. Soph Mike Sharp, a linebacker last season, has taken over at middle guard. The "key" positions in the rebuilding plan are the ends and mover spots. Rod Herlong and Greg Whiteside have removed all questions at the ends while Gary Bruns is doing the job in the secondary. Herlong is a junior letterman, Whiteside, a sophomore transfer, and Bruns, a junior letterman. "We were concerned about our contain positions before the season began because of the relative inexperience, but these men have proven themselves early," said Denning. These surprises, plus the anticipated performances of Cater, Gosnell; linebackers Steve Yates and Joe Hunter; and backs Alan Stubblefield, David Rathburn and Mark Callis, have made the Catamounts defense into a stingy, hard-nosed unit. "We have passed tw,o very tough tests from a conference CONTINUED ON Page 8 . .. . for collectors Western Carolina University University Center. Monday, September 25, 1972. 10 am- 7pm.
