From Staff Reports The. Partnership . fo Defense movation opened an office at Western Carolina University on Thursday, May 28, as part of a growing collaboration between PDI and WCU on research, development and testing for projects that have applications in the defense and security industries. PDI is a nonprofit organization created to support research and development, education and programs that have applications in defense and security. The organization maintains an: incubator facility for pani engaged in research and development of technologies associated with. military and homeland security, and collaborates with educational institutions, the military and intelligence communities, the state of North Carolina and private institutions. Working collaboratively with PDI will expose our students and faculty to cutting-edge technologies and research, and give them opportunities to be part of a wide of programs important in military defense and security, said Robert K. McMahan, dean of The Kimmel School at WCU. PDI has supported initiatives and research projects such as developing technologies that help detect disturbed earth or tunnels, or that enhance the capabilities of protective clothing or vehicle armor. The PDI West office at WCU will accommodate face-to-face interchanges and _ collaboration among PDI staff with faculty and staff of The Kimmel School as well as other colleges in WCU, with the objective of identifying and pursuing joint research, development and testing projects, said Patrick Gardner, technical director and principal scientist in The Kimmel School. Carter Wins Randall Jarrell Poetry Competition From Staff Reports Catherine Carter, an assistant professor of English at Western Carolina University, has won the 2009 Randall Jarrell Poetry Competition, sponsored by the North Carolina Writers Network. Acclaimed poet Sarah Lindsay chose Carters poem Toast from approximately 100 entries. Tt has a greater energy and rhythm...creates tension with a split viewpoint, and maintains the imagery throughout, Lindsay said. Carter will receive a $200 prize from the North Carolina Writers Network, and her winning poem will be considered for publication in the literary journal The Crucible. Poets selected for honorable mention were Marjorie Hudson, Jeff Miles, Rebecca Warren and Mary Elizabeth Parker, Catherine Carters unique poems are a joy to read and hear aloud, and they yield more and more subtle satisfactions the longer you live with them, said Elizabeth Addison, head of the WCU English department. Its been an honor to share her department. A resident of *Cullowhee, Carter coordinates the English education program at WCU. Her work has appeared in Poetry, North Carolina Literary Review, Tar River, Main Street Rag and Cider Press Review, among others. She will have work in the upcoming Best American Poetry 2009 anthology, and has twice been ee nominated for a Pushcart Prize. Her first book, The Memory of Gills, won the 2007 Rova-n0 Kie = ho wan Award. The Randall Jarrell Poetry Competition honors the. work and legacy of the poet and critic Randall Jarrell, who taught for nearly 18 years at what is now the University: of North Carolina at Greensboro. The competition is administered by Terry L. Kennedy and the graduate program in creative writing at UNCG, and is open to any writer who is a legal resident of North Carolina or a member of the North Carolina Writers Network.
