  • Page 8/ THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN/April 17, 1980 Buzz before you think WCU places second in College Bowl By Bev Van Hook Contributing Writer WCU's College Bowl team placed second in the annual North Carolina College Bowl contest Friday, April 11 at N.C. State University. The team, made up of English majors, included Alan Hobbes, Michael Grooms (captain), Kathy Malone, Paula Sain, and Teresa Beck (alternate). Faculty advisor Dr. Karl Nicholas accompanied the group to Raleigh. The contest was recorded and will be aired on North Carolina PBS television channels Sunday, May 4 at 3 p.m. "The College Bowl is a reminiscence of the old G.E. College Bowl on national TV," says Dr. Nicholas, "it is a chance for students in the English department to compete with each other." Contestants are questioned on literary works from all ages. There is a toss-up question and those who think they know the answer must ring the buzzer in front of them. The team answering the toss-up question correctly receives ten points and four bonus questions worth five points each. Preliminary games are seventeen minutes in length while the championship match lasts twenty minutes. The teams are allotted five seconds in which to answer each question. "You have to be fast and buzz before thinking," says team captain Michael Grooms. "It's like a TV game show, only the questions are harder." Examples of questions asked at this year's College Bowl are "name a work by John Steinbeck with a compass point in it" and "some of Shakespeare's sonnets are so famous that they are known by number—I'll read the first line and you give me the number." There were four teams competing in this year's contest, WCU, UNC-Greensboro, UNC-Chapel Hill, and N.C. State. State. "I thought we had won it for a minute," remarked Dr. Nicholas. WCU was victorious over Chapel Hill last year and according to Nicholas was ahead during the first half of this year's championship game. Two of this year's team members, Michael Grooms and Kathy Malone, represented WCU at the matches last year. The College Bowl has been taking place in North Carolina every spring for approximately seven years. Each year the game site is relocated to the home of the previous year's winning team. WCU has paticipated in the event for the last two years, walking away with second place both times. Bloodmobile visits campus today The WCU chapter of Alpha Phi Omega will sponsor its annual blood drive on the WCU campus April 15-17 on the second floor of Hinds University Center. The American Red Cross Bloodmobile will be taking donations on each of the three days from noon until 5 p.m. The bloodmobile regularly visits the WCU campus to collect blood for patients in Sylva's C.J. Harris Community Hospital and 37 other regional hospitals served by the Asheville Regional Red Cross Blood Center. In each visit, the health of the donor and the needs of the patient are considered to be the primary concerns. "The entire donation procedure only takes about 45 minutes from start to finish, with actual donation time taking only seven minutes," according to Mary Ritter, field representative for the Asheville Center. "The remainder of the time is occupied in taking the donor's medical history, temperature, blood pressure, performing a hemoglobin test, a short rest period and serving light refreshments," she added. While on unit of whole blood is still sometimes used for only one patient, blood is now more frequently separated into red cells, platelets, fresh frozen plasma anc cryoprecipitates and used to treat as many as four different patients, according to officials. Eligible donors between the ages of 17 and 66, weighing at least 110 pounds, are encouraged by Alpha Phi Omega and the Jackson County Red Cross Chapter to participate in the blood drive.
