  • Western Carolinian October 6, 1994 News SGA Business Underway Jafaar Nyang'oro Staff Reporter The opening of SGA business this year showed a considerable hope for many of the much needed changes on campus. According to J.B. Scire, SGA's Vice-President, there was an ultimate need for more members in the Senate to fairly represent students. He added that most things in the SGA's Constitution were outdated, calling for immediate amendments. The SGA meeting on Sept. 19, approved these amendments, giving a go- ahead for the Vice-President to make the necessary changes. The Senate also passed a bill making it a mandate for all prospective candidates for the Senator-at- Large position to serve first as regular senators. The bill also requires all aspirants for the executive office positions to have at least one year of Senate experience. Other passed bills included a request to place stern measures against those committing acts of vandalism in residence halls. Under this new bill, these victims will be required to assist in housekeeping duties as part of their punishment. In addition, two resolutions were passed forming two task committees. The first committee will scrutinize and update judicial rules. The second committee will deal with detailed research intended to make recommendations to abolish the board meal plan. This committee, known as the Committee of Advancement of the University, will hold a meeting with Marriott to propose the desired changes. In what seems to be a step toward the fight against the AIDS epidemic, SGA plans to conduct extensive research that is aimed at bringing condom machines to residence halls. Owen The New Faces of WCU Let the introductions continue, as four more new faces are presented to the students and faculty of WCU. First, Sally J. Feltner, who received her Ph.D. from Texas Women's University, comes to Western as a visitng Assistant Professor of Health Sciences. Before coming here, Feltner was a research associate at the Children's Hospital in Oakland, California. Andrew C. Owen, who received his M.F.A. from the University of Arizona, joins the Art Department as a visiting Assistant Professor. Owen was previously a visiting Assistant Professor at Davidson College. Jaqueline L. Schnieder, who received her M.P.A. from Ohio State University, joins the Criminal Justice Department as a visiting Assistant Professor. Before coming to Western, Schneider was a research assistant in the Department of Sociology at the University of Cincinati. And last but certainly not least, John W. Slater, who received his Ph.D. from University of North Carolina, comes to Western as an Assistant Professor of Communication and Theater Arts.
