  • Western Carolinian October 6, 1994 Features ■Ifflhat BDOtt cid IhiS leek: I£S time to et Inrolred ""/Stuff A feature column by Scott "Scoop" Francis Finally, my own column in the Western Carolinian. I'm really excited. I want to make my editors proud of me; I want them to say: "Scoop, you really are a great reporter who knows how to get things done." Now what the heck am I going to write about? What do the students want to read about? SEX! The students want SEX! Stories about SEX, pictures of SEX... wait a minute, this column is about what I did this week. Sorry about getting your hopes up. In reality, this column is going to be about more than what I've done. It's going to be about what is going on, and getting involved in it. Apathy and lethargy have overrun our campus, and many students don't take advantage of what is happening around them. In my small, but greatly appreciated section of the Western Carolinian, I'll try to help rectify this. Each week I hope to tell WCU about my experiences with such opportunities, as well as provide information about other upcoming events. This week I would like to tell students about WCU's Task Force on Diversity. The Task Force was initiated last year to help students of different cultures live and interact in a culturally diverse society. It attempts this by organizing activities on campus where issues of diversity are ad- dressed, like the development of student interest groups, and the installation of a cultural center. The Task Force will hold a series of meetings on Oct. 12. Students, faculty and staff are encouraged to attend. The meetings will cover issues of recruitment into the organization, and the development of academic and student programs. Anyone interested in attending any of the proceedings should contact one of the following people: Ellen Bacon (7310), Nyaga Mwaniki (7268), Gael Graham (7243), Curtis Wood (7243), or Dick Cameron (7234). - If you are an international student, or simply a person who wants to learn more about other cultures, I encourage you to check this out. This week I would also like to encourage people to get involved with the University's literary magazine, the Nomad. Any submissions (short stories, poetry, essays, etc.) as well as anyone who would like to be on the Nomad staff will be welcomed. So get involved. I hope that my column will be an interesting addition to the Western Carolinian, and will provide my valued readers with some entertainment at the very least. If you have any comments, suggestions, or are organizing an activity that you want to inform students about, then write to me at the Western Carolinian. That's exactly what will happen to people who buy the most expensive tickets to the Gallagher performance Nov. 18 at the Ramsey Center. tance, which for him is the first ten rows. Inmates sitting in those first ten rows had better bring protective covering, because they'll be taking part in what is probably the dirtiest comedy show ever. Gallagher is noted for his Sledge-o-matic ritual of spraying the audience with the pulverized remains of apples, oranges, lettuce, pumpkin pie mix, Big Macs, Spam, cottage cheese, pound cake, Pepto-Bismol and, of course, watermelon. Many showgoers turn up already Gallagherized, wearing plastic raincoats, goggles, umbrellas and windshield wipers. But that's not all a Gallagher performance has in store. Gallagher philosophizes, theorizes, hypothesizes and touches on subjects from politics and foreign affairs to religion and human behavior. He is a keen observer of human nature and the American scene. "My humor makes people think," Gallagher says. "I want people to look more closely at this country and their lives to see the humor and absurdity of it all. I don't have to make it up—the truth is funny enough." In addition to his insightful sarcasm, Gallagher fills the stage with brilliant and hilarious props. Imagine a 40-something year-old man jumping up and down on a bus-sized trampoline couch, or wearing surfboard- sized women's shoes. He has used a bicycle seat slung between 10-foot- high wheels, a motorized school desk ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ and a pair of combination roller skates/ spring shoes. Gallagher is one comedian who doesn't need an introduction. If you haven't caught one of his many concerts, it's likely you have seen him on cable. He has done 13 Showtime specials, and six of those are available through Paramount Home Video. The comedian averages 100 to 120 concerts a year, and he prepares for each show by getting in tune with the community in which he's performing. He writes all his own material, from wisecracks about local happenings to jokes about President Clinton. Tickets for his Cullowhee appearance go on sale Monday (Oct. 10). The performance will begin at 8 p.m. Nov. 18. Tickets for those who don't wish to get messy are only $12.50 for students and $16.50 for everyone else. Tickets for the first 10 rows are $18.50, no matter who you are. Gallagher offers a great opportunity to escape the Cullowhee blahs! Don't forget your plastic raincoat. Courtesy of CMPM 303
