  • Western Carolinian October 6, 1994 Sports ats Trample Paladins in 24 Battle in Greenvill Will Sullivan StaffReporter "The Cats", was written across their purple helmets and their white road jerseys were the same ones they had worn for the past three weeks. But who were those imposters who took Western's place for the first 34 minutes of their game against Furman last Saturday? That's anybody's guess. The real Catamount football team did finally show up, though, coming from behind, to post an exciting 35-24 Southern Conference win in Greenville, S.C. The Cats dominated the second half, scoring the last 28 points of the game to erase a 17 point third quarter deficit. After Furman quarterback Braniff Bonaventure found receiver Rick Ford for a 47-yard touchdown pass at the 11:10 mark of the third quarter, the Paladins held a commanding 24-7 lead. But Furman would not score again, as Western's high powered offense finally got on track and their defense stiffened. Western (3-2; 2-0 conference) began the comeback with a pair of quick third quarter scoring drives. Tailback Tim Johnson capped an 11 play, 77 yard drive with a 13-yard touchdown run to close the gap to 24-14. Less than three minutes later, Craig Aiken set up another Western touchdown with a 40 yard punt return to the Furman 19-yard line. Mark Howell darted in from six yards out for his second touchdown of the day. The TDleft Furman (1-3; 0-1) clinging to a 24-21 lead with 2:44 left in the third quarter. The Cats continued to roll in the final quarter. Fullback Marcus Roberts, who also contributed two touchdowns, scored his first on a three yard run with 12:19 left to play, capping an 11 play, 75 yard drive that gave Western a 28-24 lead. It was Western's third straight possession that resulted in a touchdown. Robert's second touchdown, at the 1:41 mark, was keyed by a Furman miscue. Paladin receiver Josh Cole fumbled a Phil Shirley punt with 3:22 left in the game. Furman would have had time to attempt a game winning drive, but Western's Brett Chappell pounced on the loose ball, giving the Cats possession at the Furman 19-yard line. After Western opened the scoring with a touchdown on their second possession, the Paladins took control. Furman, who took a 16-7 lead into the locker room, outgained the Cats by more than 100 yards in the half and held Western's impressive stable of running backs to a mere 53 yards on 20 carries. The second half, however, was a different story. The Cats rolled up 259 total yards in the final 30 minutes to account for 425 yards overall. Their running game churned out 166 yards in the second half. Western was led offensively by Craig Aiken, whose role has grown considerably with the absence of roommate/teammate Kerry Hayes. Aiken contributed the key punt return as well as 115 yards on 5 catches. He had 214 all purpose yards, which didn't include a 72-yard punt return for a TD that was called back because of a Western penalty. Mark Howell rushed for 99 yards and twoTD's while combining with receiver David Patten for 83 yards on six catches. Quarterback Chad Greene turned in another solid performance, completing 12 of 21 passes for 206 yards. Defensively, the Cats stifled a confused and flustered Furman offense in the second half. Western gave up only seven points and 127 yards in the half, and rendered Furman's running game virtually non-existent. The Paladins could muster only three rushing yards in the second half. Linemen Derek Summerour and Billy Bumper, along with linebacker Aaron Lucas, combined for 7 tackles behind the line of scrimmage. Summerour had one sack while Lucas finished with two. Head Coach Steve Hodgin didn't attribute the Cats' Jeckyll and Hyde performance to any change in the game plan, explaining that it was just a matter of execution. He did comment on one halftime adjustment, though. "We made an adjustment," Hodgin said. "We made an attitude adjustment. Our kids decided to turn it up a notch and go after 'em, and they did." Western plays host to conference rival Georgia Southern this Saturday for their first home game in five weeks. Kickoff at E.J.
