  • 18 Western Carolinian November 9,1995 Sports Lady Cats Basketball Preview Western Carolina University women's basketball fans will get a sneak preview of the 1995-96 edition of Lady Catamounts this Sunday at 4 p.m. when WCU hosts the Charlotte Royals in an exhibition game. Admission to the game is free of charge. The exhibition, as well as all Lady Catamount home games, will take place in the Liston B. Ramsey Regional Activity Center. The Charlotte Royals is an AAU team comprised of former collegiate players. Western beat Charlotte, 63-60, in last year's preseason exhibition game. WCU head coach Gary Peters enters his third season at helm of the Lady Cat basketball program with a good deal of optimism as all five starters return from last season's team that won its most games in six seasons by going 9-18. With three weeks of practice under their belts, Peters said that his players' defense has been the team's forte early. "On defense, I feel like we're better than we were at anytime last year," he offered. "These first couple of weeks, we've been putting in a new offense and the going has been slow. One reason for that is that it's just a tough offense to learn, but the other thing is that our defense has been so much better. In the long run, it's going to help us if we can continue to play defense like we've been playing. I'm confident that the offense will come around." Peters said that three players—junior Pam Owens and sophomores Missy Broy and Karen Mason—have stood out in the early stages of practice: Owens, a 5'9" wing, was the team's leading scorer last season (12.4 points per game) and ranked in the top five in the Southern Conference in steals. Broy, WCU's point guard, led all league freshmen in scoring last year with an 11.4 average, led the conference in assists (5.7), and had the best scoring average for a WCU rookie in 17 seasons. Mason, a 5'9" power forward, led all league freshmen in rebounding (6.0) and was in the top 10 in steals (2.1). "I think those three are as good as any other players at their respective positions in the Southern Conference," Peters said. Only three players, who combined to average seven points and seven rebounds a game, are missing from last year's team. Other returning letterwinners are Amy Baker (10.3 ppg); Jennifer Adams (10.9 ppg/6.0 rpg); Alicia Brittain (6.0 Ppgn.o rpg); LaSha Jackson (4.4 ppg/3.4 rpg); and Tamara McMahan (2.7 ppg/1.3 rpg). It will be the first time in the past decade that a WCU women's team has returned all five starters from the previous season. Tempering the optimism is the fact that Western was picked to finish last in the eight-team Southern Conference in the preseason poll of league coaches. "I really don't understand it considering all the progress we made last year," Peters said. "It just shows we still don't have the respect from the coaches in our conference. I think our team is motivated by that. If we're a last place team in the conference, then it's a pretty darned good conference," he added. Peters said he is approaching the upcoming exhibition game as "a glorified practice." "We're going to try to work on things we've been doing in practice," he said. "I don't expect our offense to click. If it does, it'll be a pleasant surprise to me. I do expect we'll play good defense on them. We'll be playing several different combinations." Following the exhibition game, the Lady Catamounts will have two more weeks of practice before opening the season by hosting the WCU Turkey Tipoff, Nov. 25-26.
