  • Volume 57 Number 13 Sports The Western Carolinian Page 9 Thursday, November 14, 1991 Cone optimistic but realistic about Lady Cat's season Dawn Cook Sports Writer "The Western Carolina Lady's Basketball program is not where we're supposed to be, but thank goodness we're not where we were last year," said Coach Janet Cone to describe the 1991 -92 basketball team. Coach Cone, now into her second year leading the Lady Catamounts is hopeful, but realistic about the season. "If we can keep doing the things we need to do, when we need to do them, and be consistent, I think we will eventually make some giant leaps," she said. Returning for the Lady Cats are seniors Leigh Ann Cook and Charlene Penland; juniors Lori Lyons, Amy McEntire, Marlena Surrat, and Laura Thurman; sophomores Lori Powell and Angela Rowe. These upperclassmen will provide leadership through their experience. Cook started all 27 games, leading the team in steals, and scored in double figures ten times last season. Cook is a transfer from Walters State Junior College in Morristown Tennessee where she was the starting point guard. Lady Cat center Lori Lyons averaged 11.3 points per game before suffering a fractured bone in her leg. Lyon finished last season with a strong 16-point performance in the Southern Conference opener against East Tennessee State, and scored a career-high 20 points against Winthrop. Although guard Amy McEntire sat out all of last season following orthoscopic knee surgery, she is listed as probable going into preseason. In 1989-90, McEntire played in all 27 games and started 11 times. Forward Charlene Penland played in every game, except for one, over her three-year career. "Western" From Page 8 with 21 points against Spirit Express Tuesday night. He was 9 of 13 from the floor and hit both three point attempts. "We moved B.J. to the post and what he lacks in height, he makes up in aggressiveness," explains Blatt. "He'sadjustedwell to the change. We're impressed with the manner in which he has improved. B.J. may be our most aggressive player, and his maturity could also be a plus." Helping out in the center spot is Sylvester Smalls. Smalls saw limited playing time as a freshman last season, playing in only six games. "Sly is much improved over last season," Blatt points out. "When he gets the ball on offense, he can usually do something with it." Freshman Jeff VanDeMark, at 6-10, is the tallest player to sign with WCU in five seasons. VanDeMark averaged 17.8 points, 13 rebounds, and 6.1 blocked shots last season at Doyle High School in Knoxville, TN. VanDeMark finished with 320 blocked shots, 792 rebounds, and 1,000 points in three seasons of play. "We are extremely excited about Jeff's potential and future," says Blatt. "Jeff's got excellent hands and feet. He's a good shooter. Like a lot of freshmen coming out, he needs to get biggerandstronger. Buthedoesn't let his lack of strength affect his hustle." Greg Dates, a 6-8 junior college transfer, averaged 15 points and 12 rebounds last year at Southern Union State College in Alabama, and was a teammate of Terry Boyd. Dates is ineligible at this time because of academics, but may become eligible in mid- December. "Greg has the ability to be a good Southern Conference center, but he must take care of his grades first," said Blatt Penland's best game occured last season against East Tennessee State, where she scored 24 points and pulled down 11 rebounds. Both inside and outside Penland is a scoring threat Penland sank 27 three-pointers, lead the Lady Cats with 16 blocked shots, and has been one of the team's top two rebounders every season. Center Lori Powell played 21 games at reserve center her freshman year, and averaged 6.1 per game. Forward Angela Rowe played every game as a freshman and averaged 2.3 rebounds while playing 11.3 minutes per game. Marlena Surratt, started 23 games at point guard in her first season, dishing out 67 assists and has the best scoring average (11.7) among returning players. Surratt also led the team in 3-pointers with 46 while scoring in double figures in 15 games. Surratt went on to score in double figures in eight of the last ten games. Guard Laura Thurman was dubbed the "most improved player" by Coach Cone after a solid sophomore season. Thurman played 24 games and drew no starting assignments after play ing just four minutes per game as a freshman. Thurman also scored in double figures five times, including a 20 point, nine rebound performance against Marshall. The team's eight veterans will be assisted by six newcomers "that will definitely help our program" according to Cone. After being a four-year starter on WCU's Volleyball team, senior Regina Brown made her return to basketball. This marks the first time she has played on an organized b-ball team since high school. Brown will hold the center position. Freshman center Regina Dunlap, averaged 11 points and 7.7 rebounds for A.C. Reynolds High last season. According to Cone, Dunlap "should provide help inside and serve as a good outside shooter Regina Brown and defensive player." Junior Amy Reece,<a transfer from Sante Fe Community College in Gainesville FL, was a starting point guard there. Reece averaged 6 assists per game along with 4.8 points and 3.8 rebounds. Reece also led the team in steals. Junior guard Malissa Sergent, played one year at Saint Leo College in Dade, FL, averaging 10 points, seven rebounds and seven assists before transfering to WCU. Open 9-6 12 East Main Street Sylva, N.C. 28779 Freshman forward Christy Teaster, averaged 9.8 points, five rebounds, and two assists while connecting on 50 percent of her field goals and 61 percent of her free throws last season at Sevier High Tenn. Freshman Emily Tillotson is one of three six-footers joining this year's WCU squad, and averaged 15 points, six rebounds, and six assists while shooting 60 percent from the floor and 75 percent from the free throw line at North Surry High last season. Along with talent comes hard work and practice. This season, Coach Cone will be "placing more emphasis on conditioning and a preseason workout program." Cone also wants to concentrate more on defense and fundamentals. "We came a long way last year on what was our weakest area—team defense," said Cone.
