  • 22 WESTERN CAROLINIAN SPORTS April 26, 2000 Yuracheck Named WCU Assoc. Athletic Director Sports Information Hunter Yuracheck has been named associate athletic director for external relations at Western Carolina University, director of athletics Jeff Compher announced. Yuracheck, who has been the director of marketing at Vanderbilt since 1998, will assume his responsibilities on April 25. At WCU, he will be responsible for the overall management, supervision and coordination of the sports information office, marketing and promotions, corporate sponsorship sales, radio and television properties, and ticket sales within the athletic department. "I've had the privilege of working with Hunter over the past two years and have observed his tremendous work ethic and organizational skills", said Compher. "He'll bring a sense of professionalism to this department that'll be a huge benefit to all." Yuracheck joins the Catamount staff following a two-year stint at Vanderbilt, where he was promoted from director of marketing to assistant athletic director in January of 1999. At Vanderbilt his duties included the coordination and development of marketing strategies for the university's 14-sport program, coordination of licensing and merchandising efforts, solicitation and fulfillment of corporate sponsorship agreements and serving as the department's liaison with media outlets concerning advertising campaigns. Prior to his appointment at Vanderbilt, Yuracheck spent four years at Wake Forest University, where he was assistant director of marketing and promotions from 1994-98. At Wake Forest, he was responsible for scheduling and coordinating all game-day activities involving sponsor promotions, halftime acts and performances, coordinating group and consignment ticket sales, negotiating trade agreements with local companies and assisting with marketing plans for football and men's basketball. He earned his bachelor's degree from Guilford College in 1990 and a master's in business management from the University of Richmond in 1993. He finished third in the discus and the javelin. He threw 143'04.00 and 167'01.00, respectively. Jeff Chambers added six points to the team score by placing third in the hammer with a hurl of 149'08.00. A tactful race, in the 10,000, led freshman Jesse Norman to a third place finish. He finished the 6.2 mile race with a time of 32:37.50. Senior Robert Stephens capped off his career with a fifth place finish and a personal best of 32:48.87. Joe Hyman and Akaba Glaspie finished second and third in the 200-meters. They ran 21.37 and 21.45, respectively. Hyman also won the 400-meters in 47.66 seconds. Glaspie got fourth place with a 48.58 effort. Freshman Caleb Bailey sprinted to a second place finish in the 800-meter run. He almost out kicked, John Baldwin from UT-Chattoonnga for the win. Baldwin clocked a 1:56.93 and Bailey al :57.09. A select few will leave Wednesday to compete in the Penn Relays this weekend. Tennis Falls To Furman Sports Information The Furman women's tennis team finished the Southern Conference regular season undefeated for the first time since 1994 as the Lady Paladins blanked Western Carolina 9-0 Wednesday at the Minor Tennis Center. The win was the third straight 9-0 shutout for the Lady Paladins. Furman inproves to 9-0 in league play and 15-7 overall with the victory. Furman's dominance of the Southern Conference this season has been remarkable as the Lady Paladins have won 53 of 54 conference singles matches. Senior Jarrell Starnes was victorious on senior day 6-0, 6-1 as she moves into 10th place of Furman's all-time singles, doubles, and combined wins charts. Megan Dunigan improved on her team-best 17-4 singles mark with a 6-2,6-1 victory over Janie Wicklund at No. 1 seed.Furman now seeks to win their third consecutive tournament title.
