  • THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN Thursday November 1,1573 Page 3 UNC Student Body Presidents Exchange Ideas In Union The new Union of North Carolina Student Body Presidents met for the second time to draw up a constitution and talk over problems which the individual schools had. The Union, in addition to other things, voted to exclude , for the time being, all schools outside the Colsolidate University from the group. A decision was made not to take a position on issues of public concern, such as tax reform, the 17 percent price rise by Duke Power, and the liquor-by-the-drink referendum. The group had originally intended to do so, but it was decided to wait until they were more organized, and their opinion would carry more weight, The Union was formed to pro- Students Can Promote Social Action In County Beginning this quarter it will be possible for students to become active in social action for the people of Jackson County,, In the meeting held last Thursday night, it was decided that the best way students could get involved in the community would be through providing services. The volunteer coordinator for the Jackson County Department of Social Services, Ms. Witti- Kind, has agreed to cooperate with the group completely in Committee Examines Housing A 13-member ad hoc committee has been appointed to study all aspects of housing at Western Carolina University. The committee, chaired by Dr. Tyler Combs, director of housing at WCU, will examine such varied area as housing rates, possible future uses for empty residence halls on campus, visitation policies, co-educational residence halls, possible housing for married students, and differential housing policies which would allow student to reside in halls suitable to their personal and study habits. The committee expects to make some recommendations by the end of fall quarter, Dr. Combs said. "What we have to do is find out what is wanted and needed here," he said. "Some of the students who live in the haUs will be contacted for survey purposes so we can get their ideas and thoughts." Committee members appointed by Dr. Glenn Stillion, vice chancellor for student development, are, Dr. Hohn Beegle of the School of Business; Dr. Ellerd Hulbert, history department; Barbara Mann, dean of student development; Ray Menze, art department; William Stimp, director of business services; and Sister Cathan Miles, director of Helder Residence Hall. Student members appointed by Harold Rogers, student body president, are Betsy Chapman, Donna Clemmer, Edwin Holland, Becky Irwin, Steve Montogomery and Dwight Sparks. "orfood distinctly^ locating the sources of need. Some of the activities which students can get involved in are: transportation, house repair and maintenance, visiting (in the home, in rest homes, etc.) home help (cooking, cleaning, care of sick persons), shopping (for groceries, etc.) reading listening, and working with children (recreation, big brother and big sister type activities). Not only can this be an opportunity for students to help and to get to know people outside the campus boundaries, but it can also be educational. Many of these people are accomplished at mountain crafts that are fast becoming extinct like quilting, canning, woodcarving, cooking on a wood stove, etc. They also know mountain folklore and abound with tales about life in the hills. Visiting some of these people may be just as interesting as reading THE FOXFIRE BOOK. If you would like to participate in Social Action, please fill out an application form in the social welfare office at the end of the hall, 1st floor Mc Kee, If you have any questions feel free to ask at the office and we'll try to be of help. We need as many people as possible, so sign up even if you can only help once. Keep watching the paper for notice of meetings, in which services will be explained. The meeting was held on Oct. 20 and 21 of the past week with 9 of the 16 member schools present. Law boards were being held then, or some felt that the turnout would have been larger. In the Saturday meeting, Harold Rogers, WCU student body president and the UN'C-Char- lottee president were chosen to write a constitution for the group. Also, a newsletter committee, a projects committee and a public relations committee were set up and chairmen chosen. The constitution was read to the group on Sunday, and the members were asked to consider it during the time before the next meeting. It is to be presented for ratification then. Also held on Sunday were a series of presentations by the individual presidents concerning things which their schools have done which might be of interest to the group; ideas that they have and problems which the group might be able to help with. The main problem seemed to be a lack of ideas on how to distribute money which they get. Other problems which were mentioned included apathy among members of Student Government and fif Above the , {Court hous& repressive administration policies. Some of the ideas presented included plans for a tutorial program and a prison reform work-study program. N.C. State and UNC-Charlottedidnot get to make their presentations because of time. Members of the group expressed encouragementatthe turn out and seemed optimistic about the future of their organization. It was decided to hold the meetings bi-monthly, in the western part of the state during winter and in the east during the summer. The dues were set at $10 and the next meeting was set for Dec. 1 and 2, at Western Carolina. Center Pharmacy When you think of GIFTS Books - Calendars Diaries - Cosmetics Shirts - Jackets - Etc. AM/FM stero receiver provides sufficient power (over 34 RMS watts of it) to handle the most tortuous musical passages in the average living room, and its sensitive tuner will capture your favorite radio stations with clarity. The Garrard SLX 2 automatic turntable with a Pickering cartridge and diamond stylus will treat your records gently and add no unpleasant sounds of its own. Together, these remarkable components cost just $ 425 - a savings of $40 over their usual individual prices. If you've thought that a stero stystem in this price range couldn't provide you enough sonic satisfaction, we invite you to visit The Bridge and learn otherwise. Stero systems in the S400 price range, while not unpleasant to listen to, have not as a rule provided that last bit of musical accuracy for those who take their listening very seriously. Our $425 Advent,' Kenwood,' Garrard/ Pickering stero system has changed all that, as many of our critical and satisfied customers who own it will testify. The Smaller Advent loudspeakers are a startling speaker bargain, of which high-respected STERO REVIEW magazine said, "Any preconceived ideas you may have about the limitation of sub- compact speaker systems will, we think, be shattered," The Kenwood KR3200 THE BRIDGE
