One of the most tragic facts about drunk driving is that it kills more Amerieans between the ages of 16 and 24 than any other cause. To be more specific, 14', of the driving publie is 18- 25 years of age; vet 37','i of the highway fatalities are within this age group. Attention should be drawn also to the following facts: More lives were lost 2 years on our national highways due to alcohol than in the 10 years of the Viet Nam War. 1,292 highway fatalities were recorded in NC during 1982 of which 600 were alcohol related. There were 600arrests in Jackson County in 19X2 contributed to driving under the influence of alcohol. Beer sales doubled last year (1982) in Jackson County. In an all out effort to inform and educate Jackson County High School Juniors and Seniors ol the dangers of drinking and driving, a DWI Rodeo has been scheduled lor Friday. October 7. 8:45 am - 1:00 pm in front ol Sylva-Webster High School. Friday's "DWI Rodeo" will dramatically demonstrate the lessons to be drawn from the deadly combination of alcohol and driving which claims an estimated 25.000 lives each year on our highways. During his public career, he has chaired and participated in the work ofa number of committees which helped develop new programs for North Carolina. Some of these assignments included designing the community college system, developing public kindergartens, creating an agency for the aging, and writing laws emphasizing ethics in government. Stewart, a Sunday School teacher since he was sixteen, is married to the former Donna Lynn Womble of White Lake,and is the father of five children. He is a graduate of Duke University. When you drink and drive it's everybody's business." Through the Substance Abuse Program within our schools, the idea ol responsible decision-making is being emphasized. The controlled drinking and driving demonstration is being sponsored by the Jackson County School System and the N.C. Highway Patrol, under the direction ol Sgt. Jeter Wilds and this event is being hosted bv Sylva Webster High School. Frank Burrell, Principal. All juniors and seniors from Blue Ridge and Camp laboratory High School will be in attendance. Others assisting with the planning have been members ol the Sylva-Webster staff and counseling department: J.C. Alcohol INformalion (enter: Substance Abuse and Guidance Programs for the schools; and members of the BACCHUS organization at WCU. Ihe demonstration automobile is being provided by Allison's Inc. of Sylva. lour adult volunteer drivers from the BACCHUS organization (Boost Alcohol Consciousness Concerning the Health of University Students) will drive a test (obstacle) course - first, sober to establish a baseline performance score. Each of these drivers will then be given measured amounts ol alcohol to drink under the controlled directions of Sgt. Wilds, to bring his intoxication level up to .05 per cent blood alcohol content. At that stage, each of the drivers will repeat the test course with their performance to be scored. Following that drivers will be given additional amounts of alcohol to bring then blood content up to . 10percent - the legal level of intoxication. Blood alcohol content at both stages will be registered by a breathalizer test One high school student driver will also be involved in the test in running the course three times - sober on all occasions. The driving performance scores of the five drivers will be compared. Mr. Mareellus Buchanan will speak to the approximately 600 assembled high school students concerning the newly passed Safe Roads Act. Col. Ben Pureell, U.S. Army. Retired will also be a gueat speaker. Steve Streater. Field Coordinator for the State ol N.C, of the SADD (Students Against Drunk Driving) organization will be present. Students will have the opportunity to help establish such a group in each ol their schools by registering. The training sessions for SADD will be led by members ofthe BACCHUS organization, under the direction ofthe Substance Abuse Program for the schools. After high school students have completed the SADD training, they will be able to teach students in Carl Stewart, Jr., former Speaker ofthe North Carolina House of Representatives, will announce his candidacy for the office of Lieutenant Governor in Asheville on October 10. The Asheville event, labeled a pre- announcement dinner, will be held at Bill Stanley's Barbecue in Asheville at 7:00 pm on Monday. October 10. The public is invited. It is a part of a scries of four announcement events, the others occurring on October 11 in Gastonia, Raleigh, and Wilmington. Stewart, a lawyer and owner of an insurance agency in Gastonia, is expected to emphasize his experience and his progressive ideas in the eampaing. He served for seven terms in the N.C. House, two of them as Bethany Keggan and Dawn Hinricks paddle hard for the finish line in the downriver race. (Photo by Ken Lauber) Bayh-Thomas Debate Set For October 19 OPI - Former Indiana Senator Birch BayhandCal Thomas, vice president and national spokesman for the Moral Majority political organization headed by Dr. Jerry Palwcll. will square off in a public debate Wednesday evening.Oct. 19. at 8 pm in Hoey Auditorium on the campus ol Western Carolina University. Bayh, who served 18 years in the U.S. Senate and is nationally known for his determined liberalism, replaces former Senator George McGovern on the program. MeGovern and Thomas had been paired in the debate, but McGovern cancelled after announcing his candidacy lor President. The debate is sponsored by WCU's lectures. Concerts and Exhibitions Scries and will be moderated by Dr. J.C. Alexander, associate professor of speech and theater arts at Western. Discussion is expected to cover a variety of issues and topics with Thomas defending the positions of the conservative Moral Majority, often referred to as Right, and Bayh representing progressive and liberal positions. Admission will be $5 for adults and S2 for non-WCU students: WCU students are admitted for $1 with valid identification cards. Thomas writes and broadcasts a daily radio commentary with falwcll for the Moral Majority which is broadcast on over 300 radio stations. He also writes a publie affairs television program called "Another View From Washington" in which professional correspondents analyze major events form a moral and spiritual perspective. Thomas started working for NBC News as a copy boy while he was still in high school and later advanced to jobs in production, editing and writing. As and NIK reporter, he handled network assignments ranging from White House coverage to stories involving civil rights and anti-war demonstrations, the space program, elections, earthquakes, Watergate and numerous general assignment tasks. At NBC. Thomas a ppeared on an average ol 10 network radio newscasts per week as anchorman. His television credits include the Huntley-Brinklcy Report and NBC Nightly News, and he was frequently seen on The Today Show. Bayh. 56, served three terms as a Democratic- Senator from Indiana, capping a political career which began at the age of 26 with his election to the Indiana General Assembly. He quickly rose to Speaker of the Indiana House and then ran successfully for the U.S. Senate in 1961 at the age of 34. One of the hallmarks of Bayh's style was the voluminous production of position statements and announcements cranked out by a sizable Senate stall. As ranking member of the powerful Senate Judiciary Committee. Bayh played an important role in the passange of twoconsitutional amendments, in reform of antitrust laws, and in alternative energy development. In the Senate Bayh was acknowledged as an expert on Constitutional law and. as Chairman of the Subcommittee on the Constitution. Bayh wrote and sponsored two amendments to the Constitution, the 25th and 26th Amendments. The 25th Amendment provides for Presidential succession in cases of death or disability ofthe President and a method of seleetin a Vice President, lhc Amendment provided for the orderly transition of power following thcrcsignations of Spiro Agnew and Richard Nixon. Bayh was twice a presidential candidate himself. The 26th Amendment provides forthe voting age to be 18 years of age. No other lawmakei since the Founding Fathers has written two amendments to the Constitution. I wo other amendments by Bayh. one proposing equal rights lor women and the other proposing representation of the District of Columbia equal with the states, were passed by Congress but not ratified by the states. Bayh's outspoken views on national issues have kept him in the publie eye through the years. He has long been a proponent ol reducing what he calls "the balance of horror." or the super power weaponry standotl. Bach. Chopin. Schumann. Brahms, Debussy, Shostakovich and Ravel at 8 pm in the recital hall of WCU's Music- Fnglish Building. In his more than 50 years as a concert pianist. List has established himself as a pianist of international stature. He has performed on every continent and in every U.S. state. He has played with all the major orchestras both in the U.S. and abroad and the roster of conductors with whom he's played reads like a "Who's Who" of the musical world He had been invited to serve on the jury of many prestigious international piano competitions: The Tchaikovsky in Moscow (the first American pianist to be so honored), the Chopin competition in Warsaw, the Smetana in Prague, the Bach in Washington, the Fneseo in Bucharest and the Vianna Da Motta in Lisbon. List has been sent by the U.S. on tours of Indonesia. India. Pakistan. Singapore. Poland. Ethiopia and Romania. He has toured the Soviet Union and playd in Moscow. Leningrad. Kiev. Baku. Tbilisi and Vilna. He has played for Roosevelt. Truman. Eisenhower. Kennedy. Johnson, Nixon. Churchill. Attlee. Stalin. Sukarno and Haile Selassie, along with many other heads of state or world figures. It has been noted that probably no other pianist born in the U.S. has had a longer or more distinguished career. list performed at WCU. along with his late wile. Carroll Glen, in the first Cullowhee Music Festival and was the featured artist at the dedication of WCU's Music- English Building in April of 1979. Homecoming Court Nominations Due Organizations interested in nominatinga candidate for the 1983 Homecoming Court should file their nomination with the Student Government Association by Oct. II. Applications for nomination are available through the Student Government Association, floor 2. Hinds University Center. All applications must be accompanied by an 8"xl0" glossy of the nominee. Organizations and groups not recognized by Student Government must also submit a petition of 25 names of students interested in nominating that candidate. Elections for Homecoming Court will be held Oct. 13. Elections for Homecoming Queen will be Oct. 20. Student Government invites all students to show their pride in WCU and participate by nominating or voting for the candidate of their choice.
