  • Tragic Speedweeks Coverage page 22 Totally Biased Catamount Coverage February 21, 2001 Lady Cats Dominate Weekend SoCon Play By Cory Habicht Asst. Sports Editor The Western Carolina Lady Catamounts extended their home winning streak to four after embarrassing the College of Charleston and East Tennessee State University this weekend in the Ramsey Center. Over the course of this streak the average margin of victory for the Lady Cats has been 24. The team's recent resurgence has positioned them just out of a fifth-place tie in the conference, standing only one-game behind C of C and ETSU after defeating both teams this past weekend. Monday night, Western (12-14, 6-11) topped Charleston 87-61 in the Ramsey Center. WCU jumped all over the Lady Cougars (11-15,7-10) early and never let up in a game they led for the entire 40 minutes. The first seven minutes saw the Lady Cats score 12 of the game's initial 14 points to take an early ten-point lead. They would continue to build this lead that would culminate in the first half when junior Katie Scott made a lay-up to give WCU a 20-point lead with only 3:24 remaining until the half. The Lady Cougars would then begin to fight back, however, as they narrowed the margin to 13 going into the half at 39-26. Continuing this trend in the second half, they would draw to within nine points with 16:31 left in the game. Western Carolina finally began to fight back, as freshman forward Tiffany Hamm capped a Lady Cat surge with a mid-range jumper to extend her squad's lead back out to 55-39 three minutes later. Charleston's Wilma Simpson then knocked down two free throws as part of her team-high 14 points with just over eight minutes remaining in the contest. This once again brought the Lady Cougars to within single digits at nine points. The Lady Catamounts then put Charleston away for good, outscoring them by 17 over the final eight minutes to notch the 26-point win, their second straight win by at least that margin. The game's final statistics told much the same story as the scoreboard, as Western nearly doubled the Lady Cougars' field goal shooting. The Lady Cats lit up the floor, shooting 54 percent, including 65 percent in the second half. Meanwhile, they managed to hold Charleston to a dismal 28 percent that featured only 5-for-22 shooting in the first half. Hamm and junior forward Laura Echols led five different Lady Catamounts in double figures with 18 points apiece. Echols and Hamm also led the way on the boards with nine and. six rebounds, Lady Cats Beat Bucs, Cougars continued on page 23 photo by Mark Haskett/OPl Freshman Tiffany Hamm was named SoCon Player of the Week Tuesday afternoon. She scored 24 points, pulled down seven boards, and dished out six assists in the win against East Tennessee State. Hamm scored 18 points, had nine rebounds and two blocks in the win over the College of Charleston. Baseball Takes Two at Home Against Wright State By Brett Knight Staff Writer The Western Carolina baseball team had a change of scenery this past weekend. Instead of playing on the road against a national powerhouse, they finally returned home to Hennon Stadium Childress Field to play a familiar foe. The Catamounts (2-7) came out of the weekend series winning two of three games against the Wright State Raiders (1-2). Sunday, the Catamounts scored 22 runs in the double-header, but it was only good enough for one win. They fell in the first game 13-12 but came out on top in the second 10-6 in seven innings. In the first game of the afternoon, both the Cats and Raiders went back and forth seeing six lead changes during the contest. photo by Mark Haskett Second baseman Jeremy Hamrick completes a double play against Wright State on Sunday. Wright State got on the board first as they brought one run home in the first inning. That lead was short-lived, however, as both Doug Myers and Donovan Minero each blasted two-run homers over the left-center field wall with two outs in the inning. The Raiders would cut the lead to 4-3 in the top of the second, but again WCU countered as they scored two more when Rod Goldston's double brought home Michael Roane and Ryan McCurry. The Cats would score six runs on four hits to regain the lead in the bottom of the sixth after relinquishing their advantage in the fifth, but miscues in the field the very next inning proved to be the difference in the game. The Raiders scored four unearned runs off of two WCU errors in the seventh in what proved to be the decisive inning of the game. WCU threatened in the ninth as McCurry came up with a single but was later cut down on a game-ending double play started by Raider third baseman Brad Olinger. In the second game, WCU set the tone early as Roane recorded two doubles and scored two runs in the first and second innings. He would end up going 4-for-5, with two doubles, a triple, two RBIs, and four runs scored. Western did most of their damage in the first three innings as they went up 8-0. They went up 3-0 in the first inning when Alan Beck sent a three-run homer over the left field wall. WCU would Cats Take Two of Three continued on page 23
