  • Page 2 News January 20,1994 Western Carolinian Reckless driving, snoozing in cars not allowed January 10 A staff member complained that someone was walking a dog on the track at 1250 pm. January 11 Officers confiscated a sheath knife from a student who wore the knife into the Public Safety office at 3:00 pm. The student was counseled on the law on weapons on campus and the violation was referred to Student Development. January 12 A bicycle reported stolen in October was located by the owner at a bike rack near Leatherwood. The investigation is continuing. •Officers responded to a complaint of excessive noise in front of Scott and referred two students to Student Development for underage drinking and causing a disturbance at 159 am. January 13 Officers investigated a fight between two students at the women's basketball game at 8:30 pm. Both students were referred to Student Development for disciplinary action. •Of ficersadvisedastudenton the policy on sleeping in cars on campus after finding the student in a car at Madison at 6:00 am. New year brings new funds WCU has nearly a half million dollars in scholarship money available to academically talented students for the 1994-95 school year, thanks to a recent $100,000 funding boost in the prestigious Chancellor's Scholarship program. That increase brings to $300,000 the amount of money available through the program, established in 1991 to attract high- achieving high school seniors and transfer students to Western A total of 230 scholarships are awarded each year through the program, which consists of three different types of awards. WCU also offers a variety of scholarships funded by donations to the WCU Development Foundation from alumni and friends. Sixty scholarships totalling $70,000 are awarded through the Patrons of Quality and Western Alumni programs. Academic departments provide another $20,000 in scholarship award to top students, while endowed scholarship funds furnish $40,000 in assistance. Most of these scholarships are based on academic merit rather than financial need The deadline to apply for academic scholarships is February 1 for freshmen, March 15 for transfer students, and April 15 for current WCU students. January 15 Officers arrested a student for DWI following an accident above the baseball field where the student's car left the road, overturned and rolled down the embankment at 3:51 am. Two passengers were injured, treated at C.J. Harris and released. •Officers assisted the Jackson County Rescue Squad with a report of an intoxicated female in Albright at 11:18 pm. She refused treatment. January 16 A Physical Plant employee reported that a glass door at Leatherwood had been broken at 12:30 pm. January 17 A Physical Plant employee reported a suspicious sign in Stillwell at 3:41 pm. •Officers found a student driving on the sidewalk at Wachovia Bank at 11:20 pm. The student was arrested by the Jackson County Sheriff's Department for DWI. •Officers cited a student for reckless driving and driving left of center in connection with an incident which occurred near Belk and Creek Road at 11:51 pm. The student and a passenger in the vehicle were also charged with resisting , delaying and obstructing an officer when they ran from investigating officers. Biology scholars rewarded KAREN CARLSON CHRIS SCHLENKER Western Carolina University's biology department presented its top scholarships to two students from Western North Carolina during its annual awards banquet Friday, December 3. The recipients are Karen L. Carlson of Bryson City and Chris T. Schlenker of Franklin. Carlson, a junior majoring in biology, received the $500 WCU Biology Department Scholarship. She is president of the WCU Biology Club and a member of the Bartram Trail Society. A 1978 graduate of Swain County High School, Carlson previously attended WCU from 1979 to 1982. Recipients of the WCU Biology Department Scholarship are selected by the biology faculty on the basis of academic excellence and student potential. Schlenker received the $500 Don Yopp Scholarship. A sophomore majoring in biology, Schlenker is a 1992 graduate of Frankl in High School, a member of the Pre-Health Professional Association and the WCU marching and pep bands. The Don Yopp Scholarship is named for a distinguished WCU biology student who died of an apparent heart attack just weeks after graduating with honors in 1979.
