The Chelsea Gallery holds 10 of Jacob's paintings, including "Balsam Ridge" from 1998 and "Junaluska" from 1999. The Gallery is one of the requirements Jacobs had to accomplish to receive his Master's degree in Art. Jacobs is in the process of finishing his thesis statement supporting his paintings and will graduate this May. Jacobs named his thesis exhibit "A Personal Vision of Dramatic Early Evening Light on the Contemporary Rural Landscape." The focus of the exhibit has been to explore a personal vision created by the drama of early evening light on form and color of the contemporary rural landscape. The paintings show the movement of light, its illumination of color and defini tion of form. The colors used in the paintings depict the colors at the moment when the sun sets over the landscape and the excitement and drama of the moment. Jacobs does not paint the specifics of the landscape but intentionally simplifies the form so the viewer will see the light and form and not be caught up in the details. When asked what style Jacobs considered his painting to be, he said that it was his interpretation of the landscape of Western North Carolina. Although he appreciates many artists, Jacobs said his favorite painter is Richard Diebenkorn. Jacobs' father is also an artist and started him in his painting career. Working at the UC during the daylight hours, Jacobs paints from memory in his home at night. The paintings in the exhibit are impressive and unique. Each portrays an artist's view of the sunsets and landscapes that very few really appreciate. The Chelsea Gallery is located on the second floor of theUC Easter Sunday Morning Worship Service Alliance Bible Church is meeting Easter Sunday Morning at 11:00 a.m. at Comfort Inn on 19- 25 in the conference ROOM. Students Play Stock Market With TVA $100,000 Challenge OPI A program sponsored by the Tennessee Valley Authority is allowing business students at Western Carolina University to gain experience in financial investment management. TVA has provided $100,000 to WCU and 18 other universities in the Tennessee Valley region to invest in the stock market. It's a program called the TVA Investment Challenge, and participating institutions are competing for a share of $75,000 in prize money for best one- and three-year returns. "Our students are acting as real money-mangers, and we're not talking Monopoly money here. These are real dollars," said Ronald Shiffler, dean of the WCU College of Business. "While our students don't get to keep the $100,000 or any of the returns on their investments, they're not going to be out anything if they happen to pick the wrong investments, either." Students in an investment analysis class taught by Grace Allen, WCU associate professor of finance, spent the fall semester analyzing companies, industries and the economy. Investment professionals worked with the students during the semester to provide support as they decided how and where to invest. "By the end of the semester, we had selected 18 stocks for the portfolio," Allen said. "We haven't announced our companies publicly because, after all, we are com peting with other schools, but among the companies we considered were Walmart, Johnson & Johnson, 3 Comm, America Online, TJ Maxx, Legg Mason, Sun Micro Systems, Dell, Merck and Gap." With a stock portfolio now selected, another group of students is working this spring on tracking industries and trends, re-evaluating the selected stocks for possible sale or additional purchases, and conducting in-depth analysis on potential new stocks to purchase. The students recently visited the Atlanta headquarters of one of the companies in the WCU portfolio, and plans to visit another company's headquarters in Knoxville, Tenn. The students also will attend the spring TVA Investment Challenge Conference in Nashville, Tenn., in April. The TVA Investment Challenge, a nearly $2 million program, is funded with a portion of the money TVA has set aside to decommission its nuclear plants. Each participating university is allowed to develop its own program, within TVA guidelines, for managing its $100,000 portfolio, said David N. Smith, TVA's chief financial officer. "This is a creative use of TVA resources that offers unique opportunities for learning and for training the region's next generation of financial leaders," Smith said. Western Carolina is the only university in North Carolina participating in the TVA Challenge. Other competing universities are in Tennessee, Alabama, Kentucky and Mississippi.
