WCU has. ;i\ mentioned in a previous article, one ol onlv six student emergency care teams in the U.S. In addition, its Emergency Medical Care Bachelor's Degree is the onlv accredited four sear program at any university, The Catamount campus is also privileged to have the first and onlv Emergency Medical Care Professional Society. Epsilon Sigma Pi. in the United States I his is a brand new organi/ation which was organized and charted in December ol 19X2. Ihe fraternity is open th EMC" majors Ihe requirements are a 2.0 QPR overall and a 3.0 in the courses ot the IMC major Ihe purpose ol the fraternity is to show how the IMC setting is run. and just what paramedics and emergency medical personnel do. Lor more insight into this, Epsilon Sigma Pi is in the process of getting lecturers Irom the State Office ol Emergency Serv ices to come to Western. I hey also held blood pressure screenings during EMS Week, one in conjunction with SEC learn One major operation coming up this fall will be a lour session course in Search and Rescue. The class, to be taught by Epsilon Sigma Pi president Bryen Belcher, will concentrate on more than just finding someone in the woods. It will be basically. "taking care ol yourself," Belcher said, "if you're lost in the woods." The requirements are simply and amount of interest anil there won't be any charge. Belcher will demonstrate basic techniques of rock climbing, and improvising lor medical equipment from what's naturally available. It's important to try and maintain, "a pood level of emergency care in a wilderness situation." Bclchei stated. He is trying to get the course started in November and is looking forward to teaching it. Another thing Belcher and publie relations officer Matt Mathews are working on is getting Epsilon Sigma Pi nationalized. I'he crcsl and name are about to be registered with the 1 ibrary ol Congress, but the main concern is getting LMC fraternities started in othei schools. Since Western in the onlv university in the I S with the B.A. in emergency medical care, this is restricting Epsilon Sigma Pi from growing as last as it would like. However, right now there are a lew othei colleges, like Marv land I nivcisity and Davenport College in Michigan that are thinking ol adding the lour year program to then eurriculums. "Part ol my and Malt's job." Belehei explained, "is getting in touch with them (the colleges), giving them information about how our program is sci up. and seeing what thev want to put in their programs." Ihe E psi Ion's are also getting a CPR course started on campus, so thev can be certified as instructors. According to Belehei. Dr. Connelly. Dean ol Nursing. asked members last year it thev would, "be responsible li>r teaching all the nursing students CPR We had two instructors in the society last year, hut both ot them are now working professionally. So now we have toget some more certified instructors." This is just oncol the many goals Epsilon Sigma Pi is working toward. Thev expect ot reach many ol them this veai. These high standards will hopefully set them apart from SEC 'Learn, and stop the contusion between their fraternity name *ind another new Irateinitv on campus. International Student Guests Honored OPI - Some 75 students representing 27 nations were guests Sunday night ol the Community Volunteers for International Programs (also known as the Host Family Program) for a "Getting to Know You" dinner in the (irandroom ot Hinds University Centei at Western Carolina University. Special guests include Dean Jerome Skhakhanc of the University of Swaziland, a distinguished visiting faculty member at WCU this semester: Merton 1 . Cregger. The group was welcomed by Mrs. H.F. Robinson. wife of WCU Chancellor H.F. Robinson, followed bv an address bv Dr. Glenn Stillion. vice chancellor lorstudent development. Starlett Craig. WCL international student adviser. introduced lommie Steele Irom Jamaica, who is the new president of the WCU International Student Organi/ation. A round-robin ot introductions ol everyone present followed, with personal comments made by the international and national students. It was noted that every year more than 250,000 students come from countries all over the world to studv in the flnited States. The fact that WCL is one ofthe universities that students have chosen to attend gives Jackson County something of an international flavor. Although the international and national students come her to studv. letters received from those who have returned home indicate that along w ith the knowledge gained Irom then studies, considerable impact was made in their lives bv the'memories thev gathered while guests in our area. Many ol the international students who visit Western return home to assume positions of leadership in then countries where they share their impressions of America. The organizers ol the Host Family Program. therefore, feci that residents of Jackson County, through their association with the international program, can be unofficial amhassodors of the county and the United States. Persons interested in participating in the Community Volunteers for International Programs may obtain further information by contacting Carole Martin at 293-5089 or Jackie Starling at 293-51X2.
