  • Volume 58 Number 7 Features The Western Carolinian Page 5 Thursday, September 24. 1992 Peter Buck Contributing Writer Most of us think that what stresses in our lives now were probably established in our early childhood. Though these responses (e.g., being depressed or guilty or anxious) have become quite automatic, still they are our responses, our means of survival and they are experienced in all their power and intimacy only by us. Even if everyone around us considers our reaction of depression to some hurtful situation to be quite "natural", still it is our reaction and we do have some personal power to change it (with some effort overtime). If the above is true, then why would we choose such painful long term feeling behaviors such as depressing and anxiety ing? (Glasser likes to turn these words into actions to 1/4 to 1/3 of us have experienced anger out of control. Thus, many of us want to have as little to do with anger as possible. It is clear that to act on anger (and not just to feel it) may involve one in precipitous self (or other) destructive actions... When one depresses instead of angers, one moves more slowly and buys some time to consider what to do. 2. Others will help us: Shar ing oneself as being in psychological pain is a way to ask for help without being assertive. Pain can be a non-verbal plea without ever having to stoop to begging. Extreme pain can also give a person permission to seek help from a counselor. 3. We're excused from actu- allvimprovinp our situation: Incases of severe depression it's hard to even get out of bed in the morning let alone go out looking for work or start a new life after a spouse's death. "I'll do it when I feel better" is a common statement. However, it remains a fact that motivation is often created by going out and doing necessary things and thus experiencing (even a modest) success. Waiting to be motivated before one does something makes "feeling sense" but is not the most effective strategy. 4. Controlling family and friends: If one feels bad enough and has never had a sense of one's own power, men it may be sadsfying (If it weren' t so painful) to see how others do not just help but organize their lives around you because of the anxiety and guilt they feel in the face of your unrelendng misery. This is an incredibly painful way to get security and attention for yourself but it is often effective. Finally, I would note that Glasser does not think that people can just cheer up and start choosing what is best for them once they realize that may actually be choosing their misery. But still, knowledge can be a first step and it is true that there are less painful ways to get needs met. Other paths, perhaps scary ones, exist, for example: a) assertiveness; b) fears can be faced by taking action in small but definite steps; c) anger can be felt without being acted on; d) we can call others to work with us not just when we are incapacitated by pain. I repeat, people do not, for the most part, consciously use their pain to Glasser's four ends. But a legitimate question asked widi compassion always is: Is this long term pain getting you what you want? Is this the best way to get what you want? For instance, if a girlfriend or some pretty good sense to us on boyfriend leaves we'll be depressed. some level because it is certain dial Diet claims could be false If I am laid off from work but then find a wonderful new job I'll be first depressed and then delighted. However, William Glasser in his book, Control Theory , proposes that his common notion is only true to a degree, he does agree that in the initial moments of experiencing frustration or satisfaction there is a quick burst of pure pain or pleasure. But after that automatic physiological reaction an element of choice enters in. Glasser thinks diat in order to extend the satisfaction or cope with the frustration we begin to implement more long lasting feeling behaviors such as being depressed or being loving. Admittedly, the ways we chose to respond to crises and their cost is high. They are painful to keep up for more than a fraction of an hour let alone for months or years. In Glasser's experience there are four basic things that such misery achieves: 1) anger is controlled; 2) Others notice our pain and come to our aid; 3) being in misery excuses us from having to take immediate action diat may be fearful to us; and 4) one can actually control family and friends by appeal to one's pain. Let's look at each of these a little more closely: 1. Anger is controlled: In our society most people fear anger a great deal. We equate anger widi violence and being out of control. Could it have been avoided by something as simple as drinking milk? Should advertisers be allowed to claim that their products will reduce die risk of osteoporosis? Maybe, says the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. There is a relationship between getting enough calcium in die diet and the development of osteoporosis, but die claim will have to be qualified. Dr. lohn Vanderveen director of the FDA's Division of Nutrition, explained the in's and out's of food labeling claims to North Carolina food processors Jan. 15 and 16ataFoodLabelingDecisions workshop. The workshop, held at Norm Carolina S tate University, was sponsored by die North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service. Health claims on foods will be more complete and less potentially misleading if regulations proposed by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration are approved. The FDA began an investigation of a number of health claims after Congress passed the Nutrition Labeling and Education Act of 1990. After a thorough review of available research, the FDA published its evaluations in November. The law states that health claims must be trudiful and not misleading. Consumers must be able to understand the significance of the information in the context of the total diet. Sufficient intake of calcium does help reduce risk of osteoporosis, die brittle-bone disease that affects many older women. Getting enough calcium isn'tenough to prevent osteoporosis though. People need to exercise and eat a balanced diet Qiroughout dieir lives. It is being proposed dial these facts be on die label too. AnoUier significant change in the law will forbid healdi claims on foods dial contain significant levels of other nutrients such as fat and sodium diat are not to be moderated in the diet. The manufacturer would be forbidden to put a health claim for the calcium on die product because high levels of sodium are linked to high blood pressure and high levels of fat are linked to cardiovascular disease and cancer. A health claim for the benefits of calcium also would not be allowed if the calcium present could not be properly absorbed by the body. For example, research has found mat high levels of phosphorus block the body's ability to absorb calcium, so if die product was high in calcium and phosphorus, it could not have a health claim for the calcium. AnoUier restriction would affect food manufacturers affects wording. Milk could be termed "a food that is naturally high in calcium." A carton of milk couldn't be labeled "high in calcium" since such a claim might mislead consumers into assuming that one brand of milk was high in calcium and another was not. What actually controls today's world? Is it money, weapons, people or politicians? I don't think so. Today's world thrives on informadon. Information, encoded in a series of 1' s and 0's, is the essence of every leading nation on Earth. Think about it. Every missile code, bank record, government document and personal record is on computer where it is backed up safely where no one can reach it. What if someone developed a code mat could break every security code known at this time? It happens. In "Sneakers," a code has been developed to destroy all safety features protecting sophisticated computer information. There is not one government on Earth that would not kill to get their hands on such a destructive weapon. Someone has stolen it. Now it will be a race against time to retrieve it before it falls into dangerous hands. Robert Redford leads an all- star cast in this high-tech spy thriller. Redford, Sidney Poitier, Phoenix River and Dan Akroyd portray a team of ex-cons who have teamed up to do what they do best. Each has a criminal record of some sort of computer related crime. Togedier diey test security systems of major corporations by attempting break-ins at die request of die owners. They have been hired to retrieve a computer code-breaker from a mathematician believed to be developing it for the Soviet Union. Not everything is as clear as it appears. It is delivered to representatives from a very dangerous organization who plans to destroy or reorganize die world as we now know it. The government can't find it. The only people who can retrieve it are the ones who stole it in the first place. Then they face the wradi of lames Earl Jones, who portrays the Director of the National Security Administration. This cast of seasoned ac tors present a mesmerizing performance. It's frightening to realize how much of the story is possible. Viewers will not feel die film talking down to dieir level of technological comprehension. Everything is explained as it is presented so die audience relates to the events portrayed. I give this film 3 1/2 stars! "Sneakers" is a sophisticated film. It is well written, die direcUng is fantastic and the acting is outstanding. "Sneak ers" is the best thriller to appear in theaters this season. Party etiquette Study and stress relief Hayley Nicholas StaffWriter There comes a time in every college student's life when he or she, as the case may be, feels the urge to unearth oneself. He or she pushed aside the ink-stained, doodled-upon spiral ring binder, tosses away the do-earred copy of C liff Notes to Dickens, crawls from beneath die looming mountain of worries about quizzes, research papers, and impending midterm, and makes a furtive, stretching reach toward the dazzling light of die social scene. In other words, we like to ditch die school tiling every once in a while and run find some fun, meet other temporarily emancipated students, and if possible, get into a little trouble. Undoubtedly, the most popular and efficient way to accomplish these goals is a gathering, large or small, termed 'party.' Now a party can be many things, and a party can serve many functions. Whether a group of students finds itself at a local restaurant eating dinner and discussing die merits of 'Northern Exposure' over die 'Cosby Show' or a mob of said students happens to be confined to a small area consuming massive amounts of alcohol, certain WELCOME BACK WCU! First of all, one must be sensitive to the tone of a gathering, hence die'Tone Law.' If a group of students is engaged in a game of Monopoly, dancing on the coffee table is not acceptable behavior, not unless it's a really good game. Likewise, it is not a wise idea to station oneself by the key and expound on me theories behind gravitational force. This law is not difficult. All it requires is a little sensitivity and responsive patterning of behavior. Logically following the 'Tone Law' is the 'Law of Mingling.' Once tone is established, mingling comes easy. Mingling is simply being sociable, being open, being yourself, and it is a must for proper party edquette. It can also be fun and educational. Allow yourself to be drawn into that discussion of Ross Perot's ears, and don't be afraid to reveal that they remind you of saddle bag flaps. The last major law of party edquette is termed 'The Girl Scout Law.' When Girl Scouts go camping, they are admonished by their green bedecked leader to 'leave the camp site cleaner than they found it.' While attending parlies, it is not necessary to be quite so extreme, but do remember to wipe your feet, clean up your spills, and find a proper way of disposing of your refuse. Throwing your beer cans on the roof is not considered acceptable. These three major laws having been covered, we come to edquette concerning specific types of parties. At a band party, the 'Tone Law' comes heavily into play. If the mu sical ensemble is crooning its way sofdy through a rendition of 'Memories,' attempting to start a dirash pit is not advisable. Conversely, if die band has j ust completed an ear-piercing, guitar-shrieking, bass-thumping comer of a Metallica tune, requests for Freebird may not be appreciated. "Party" See Features Pg. 6 1
