  • March 22, 2000 SPORTS WESTERN CAROLINIAN 19 Well, I've Always Liked Sweet Sixteen Pools Better by David Bartholomew Asst. Sports Editor After the first round, I was 29- 3.1 don't think I picked one game right in the second. Two of my final four are out. Massive knowledge, eh? When does baseball season start? Fortunately, many others found themselves in similar predicaments following the unbelievable upsets in round one. So burn, decimate, drown, or toss your 64-team bracket and suggest to your boss or president that the he or she start a Sweet Sixteen pool. Anyone who had Arizona, Stanford, Cincinnati, Temple, St. John's, Maryland, Ohio State, and Oklahoma packing their bags after this weekend can have this column. Hoftsra had a better chance. Mike Krzyzewski said, "match-ups will be the key." He was right. With no dominant team, strategy and match-ups become even more important. Haywood matched up well with the trees from Stanford, Cleaves was a little too much for Utah, and Gonzaga played too smart for St. John's. Ohio State still can't shoot. One other thing; I recently discovered that posting a Final Four, March Madness, Sweet Sixteen, Elite Eight, or any other NCAA affiliated slogan costs $50 per pop. A clever con and ridiculous rip-off by a money-making, naughty NCAA. So here's my much more modest take on the sweet sixteen. Wisconsin-LSU LSU has obvious athletic advantages over the Badgers. So did Fresno State and Arizona. The key for the Tigers will be avoiding turnovers. If Wisconsin's defense can frustrate Swift and force LSU into a slow game, the Badgers are more than capable of knocking down three's and sending the Tigers home. I like LSU to play their best ball of the season and end Wisconsin's brilliant run, but it will be close. Purdue-Gonzaga I still don't believe Purdue David's squeaked by Dayton. Nevertheless, Gene Keady has Purdue closer to the Final Four in 2000 than ever before. The Boilermakers must shoot well and crash the boards to advance beyond new national power Gonzaga. The Bulldogs play solid fundamental basketball and shooting will be a key for them as well. Gonzaga will defeat Purdue, but this team is no Cinderella. Gonzaga may be the best team left in the West region. UCLA-Iowa State Perhaps, the best match-up in the Sweet 16. This game is hard to pick. UCLA looks as impressive as anyone in the tourney. The Bruins made an uninspired Maryland team look pathetic. Iowa State is the only #2 seed left, and one of my original Final Four picks. Based on my success in round two, I will therefore pick the Bruins. Marcus Fizer and company will be tough, but I like UCLA to play disciplined basket ball and send my Final Four pick number three home. Michigan State-Syracuse Finally an easy one! (hey Utah almost, ah, nevermind) The Orangemen do not shoot the ball well enough to beat the Spartans. Michigan State moves on. Duke-Florida Duke did not play well against Kansas and needed a miracle steal by Carlos Boozer to advance. The Gators needed a miracle drive by Mike Miller to get past Butler. Both of these teams are much better than they showed over the weekend. Florida does have a chance to upset, if they knock down the three's or if Duke doesn't play Duke basketball. I still like the Blue Devils to advance. Coach K has too much time to prepare his smart team for the Gators attack. Oklahoma State-Seton Hall This has a losers bracket feel to it. Neither team will beat the Duke-Florida winner. The Cowboys impressed me over the weekend. Eddie Sutton will get Oklahoma State ready for the Pi rates three point shooting arsenal. Great run by Tommy Amaker's Seton Hall, but it ends here. Miami-Tulsa Johnny Helmsley must continue his torrid shooting if the Hurricanes are to advance. Both teams are quick and use their defense to create easy baskets. I like the Golden Hurricanes depth to tire Miami's Canes and eventually get the needed turnovers to advance to the Elite Eight. North Carolina-Tennessee OK, OK. I was wrong. North Carolina played their best defense of the season and avoided the turnovers to win two straight games. So do I believe the Tarheels can put three consecutive impressive performances together? No way. Tennessee will cause lots of match-up problems for North Carolina. Haywood will play well, but unless Forte scores 25+, the Vols will be too quick and cause too many turnovers. Duke, Tennessee, Michigan State, and Gonzaga in the Final Four? We shall see.
