  • PAGE 16 THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN/Octobcr 4, 1979 Coste//o wins MHD run John Costello of Cullowhee won the 5 mile Kiwanis Mountain Heritage Day Country Run with a time of 28 minutes and 13 seconds. He was more than a minute ahead of the second place runner Hal Cooper, last year's winner, who finished in 29:53. In third place was Brian Montgomery. Other winners by divisions were women under 30; Amanda Home of Brevard (aye 8); women over 30, Sue Home, of Brevard (first woman); nun under 15, Lawson Duncan of Cullowhee; men 15-29, Costello; men 30-44, Sieve Hold of Cullowhee; men 45 and over, Ken Youngblood ol Hendersonville; Mountaineers. Scores were computed by a formula which considers age, sex, number participating and time. Psychology was' followed by teams from Human Services, Math and Elementary Education and Reading, in thai order. Psychology had the fastest time, averaging 33.8 min. over the 5 mile course. Player of the Week For the third week this season, a Western Carolina player has been selected a Southern Conference Player of the Week by the conference's sports media association. Ricky Smith, a junior linebacker, was voted the weekend's top defensive player for his "super" performance in the Elon game. The Athens, Ga. product was credited with 21 tackles,, including four for losses amounting to 28 yards, recovering a fumble, intercepting a pass and breaking up a pass play. "This was one case where statistics speak," said Don Powers. WCU's defensive coordinator. "Ricky played some kind of football game. His performance epitomized our defensive effort in the Elon game— lough, aggressive, smart football." Il is .Smith's second Southern Conference Defensive Player of the Week award. He claimed his first award as a freshman in 1977 for an Outstanding game against U.T.-Chattanooga. Earlier this season. John Strong was selected as the defensive player of the week and Mike Pusey claimed ihe offensive player of the week honor. The race took place in Cullowhee on September 29th as part of the Mountain Heritage Day festivities and is sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Cullowhee-Sylva. lec simis were provided in the Mountain Heritage Committee.
