  • PAGE 14 fHE WESTERN CAROLINIAN October 4.1979 Sports WESTERN CAROLINIAN Waters: This is THE game Citadel a MUST win Before the 19"71) football season began. Western Carolina's game with The Citadel was probably not placed in the "Big Game" category by the Catamounts followers. Suddenly, ii Ikis become the most important game on Western's schedule. "Wc arc approaching this game as if ii was the only one remaining on our schedule," says WCU's head coach Bob Waters, "Hue expect to stay in the conference race, we must win this one," he adds. The Catamounts, 3-2 overall and l-l in Southern Conference play, travel to Charleston, S.C. for a Saturday evening (7:00 p.m.) game with The Citadel's Bulldogs, 2-2 overall and 1-0 in the conference, "As far as we are concerned, Satruday is THE game tor us." savs Waters in emphasizing the importance of the contest, "lt not only means a great (leal for us in ihe conference, but we sure would hate to spend our open dale next week thinking about a loss." he adds. Western cannot afford another loss in league play while The Citadel, though unbeaten in the conference, must play three of its lasl tour league games on the road. A crowd of 18.000 to 20.000 is expected to be on hand lor Ihe important Southern Conference clash in Johnson-Hagood Memorial Stadium. Coach Art Baker's Bulldogs have turned their season around after back to back season opening losses to Presbyterian and Navy with impressive wins over Vanderbilt (27-14) and Appalachian State (24-23). The Citadel rushed for over 400 yards in the upset of Vanderbilt and contained Appalachian's explosive offense in another surprise win. Western Carolina continued its pattern of inconsistency last Saturday, but still managed a 20-7 defense-led win over visiting Elon College. The Catamounts' offense turned the football over to Elon six limes in the opening half and trailed 7-0 at halftime. An inspired defense took the ball away from Elon three times in the second half to set up Catamount scores. "Our offense is still inconsistent." says Waters. "We are not holding on to the football, not getting good plays out of our fullbacks and making far too many mistakes on the offensive line to be a success," he explains. Waters did find some positive performances on his offensive unit in the win over Elon. "Leonard Williams (13b yards rushing) and Anthony James ran well and Gerald Harp is returning to his form of last season." he noted. Williams picked up his sixth and seventh touchdowns and James scored the tying touchdown. Harp, the Southern Conference's co-Player of the Year in 1978. caught 10 passes for 115 yards in the rain and ran his season total to 25 catches for 447 yards. Despite the mistake-prone play of the offensive line. Waters had praise for senior center David Willingham. tackle Joel Potts and guard Steve Grayson. Grayson will replace veteran Curtis Allen, who suffered a dislocated elbow . on the offensive line for the next few weeks. Waters says he couldn't be more happy with the defensive play against Elon, "We played tough, aggressive football and our defense was our best offense al times. The defense bailed us out several limes." he noted. Linebacker Ricky Smith led the Catamount defense thai limited Elon to 103 yards of offense. Smith, a junior from Athens. Ga.. accounted for 21 tackles and recovered a fumble and intercepted a pass that set up IWO WCU scores. Waters also noted the defensive play of tackles Bobby Peche and Larry McClain and safeties Thomas Gunn and Willie Carpenter. Waters labels The Citadel "a good, solid football Leonard Williams sloshes through the Elon defensive line during Saturday's 20-7 win over Elon. McDaniel. leam that will be the most disciplined team we will face this season." "They have improved tremendously since that first game and have been getting stronger each week," adds Waters. The Bulldogs run the Veer offense and average approximately 50 running plays per game and 16 pass plays. Their quarterback (Tim Russell) is truly outstanding. He is probably the finest we will face this season. He outplayed Appalachian's Steve Brown all over the field and wc thought Brown was the finest we would see this season." says Waters. This will be the fourth meeting between WCU and The Citadel. The Catamounts split the two previous games in Charleston, winning in 1972 (10-0) and losing in 1977(20-0). Western won last season's game in Whitmire Stadium. 38-24. Cats crucify Christians Western Carolina University rallied from a 7-0 halftime deficit, six turnovers and a blocked punt, to overcome a fired-up upset-minded Elon College, 20-7 in Whitmire Stadium Saturday night. The Catamounts, hampered by inclement weather and a defense that had not allowed a touchdown in three previous games, had to struggle to gain their third victory in five contests. In the end, the erase-filled victory belonged to the Catamount defense, as they held the Fighting Christians to just 103 yards for the game, 0 yards in the air. Elon also gained only 6 first downs as their NAIA All-American tailback, Bobby Hedrick had to carry the ball 40 times for 112 yards. Not only that, their only touchdown came on an interception return by linebacker Ernie Tootoo, a 47 yarder with 13:40 left in the half. The game did not turn around for WCU until linebacker Ricky Smith recovered a fumble on the second play of the second half, at the Elon 6 yard-line. It took the Cats four plays to muscle the ball over the goal line with a half-yard leap by Anthony James. Ted Dunn kicked the extra point for the 7-7 tie. After the Cats and the Fighting Christians traded punts, Elon took over at the 11. The Cats forged ahead, with just 5:09 seconds left in the game when Charlie Hughes forced Hedrick to cough the ball up with John Strong recovering for Western. Then Leonard Williams picked up 19 of his 136 yards in two plays, scoring from the 17 on a draw play to put the Cats ahead, 14-7 with 4:50 left. On Elons's first play after the score, Ricky Smith picked off a Jeff Michel pass at the 48 yard line of Elon to set up the icing touchdown, a one yard run by Williams with 1:36 left in the contest.
